Hi - purchased a motorhome with refillable gas tanks - do we need to turn off the gas prior to refilling at the petrol station? - we have seen the video re how to use the pumps, but query re fridge being on and if we have to turn the gas off prior to re-filling - is this a simple procedure - thanks in advance

Surely your fridge would be on 12 v (if a three way fridge) and only goes onto gas after 15 mins??

Not sure why your gas tank would be on as you got to the station ? Surely it would be off as you were driving ?

As l understand it when ever you turn off the ignition the gas automatically turns off and then once you restart the engine after 15 minutes the gas automatically switches back on,
l always put the fridge onto gas as 12v cannot really cope.

I don't think this is correct. if the fridge is on gas rather than auto, the gas will stay on regardless of whether the engine is running. When on auto it will run on 12v while the engine is running but there is a 15 minute delay before the gas lights once the ignition is off to allow safe fuelling.

You may well be correct, however,on my MH this is what happens and has on 3 previous ones same marque, we have checked on occasions when leaving a Petrol Station.

I have never turned my gas off to refill as I would need to crawl underneath the van to do it. Are you talking about filling an underslung tank or refillable cylinders? Mine is underslung.

I’d say it’s not just an offence but pretty much suicidal to park in a filling station with a gas flame alight

The simple way is to try it out at home on the driveway or somewhere other than a petrol station. set the fridge for auto and run the engine - then turn the engine off , remove the ignition keys and see how long it takes before it turns the gas on

If your van is fitted with a crash detector bulkhead regulator this will allow you to use the gas heating whilst on the move. As far although I cannot see the difference this does not allow you to use the fridge on gas whilst travelling. If you have a SES fridge with auto this selects energy for the fridge in the following order 240, if not available gas. If it detects a 12 volt supply such as when the alternator is charging it will switch to this, returning immediately to 240 or the gas of no other source it will wait app 15 mins before igniting the gas. This is to prevent a naked flame being present when refuelling. If you do not have a auto setting and are using gas on the move whatever the legal or safety position you run the dangerous risk when at a petrol station of causing an exploding. Although the may be rare it is still an unacceptable risk

With the fridge on auto ours switches to gas immediately that th engine is switched off.

According to the instructions we can use gas for heating while on the move, we have the auto cut off collision protecter plus anti rupture valves in our new Gaslow bottles.

This is not correct there should be a delay of 15 mins??

You have a fault then & a very dangerous fault. Older fridges you had to switch them manually, AES fridges have the delay before switch over.

It is OK with a fan flued heater but not with a naked flame which the fridge burner is.

Could it be that it appears to have switched over to gas, as the engine has turned off. But has not, in fact, ignited the burner, and will not until 15 minute delay.

I'm really glad ours is manual selection. There's lots of threads about fridges having a mind of their own.

In fact all my Burstners have done the same - 3

Things I encountered on my first fill, and still get;

Engine off.
Switched electric off, not sue why.
Didn't turn the gas bottles off as I was told it wasn't required.
Adaptor screwed in.
Following the instructions on the pump had a moments panic over the 80% rule.
Hit a wall as the next instruction was to press and hold the red button! To me the big red button is pushed to blow things up!!!!!
Pressed and held the button and watched the meter wind up until the pump cut out.
Detached pump handle.
Attention: Went to remove the adaptor, it was freezing!!!!! Use a glove! Also with the temperature change it was difficult to unscrew the adaptor.

After fill: Being a scaredy cat and still worried about the 80% fill level, Turned a hob ring on with the ignitor off, to ensure that Propane Gas came out and not Propane Liquid!

For 15 years or more fridges have been fine on 12v. It is an offence under the road traffic act to drive with an open gas fla

Our 30 Edition (2019?) Buerstner Travel Van doesn't - it waits 15-20 mins before using gas. Having said that I always turn the gas off anyway - If I can't pay at the pump I worry that by the time the 10 people in front of me in the queue have bought their coffee, crisps, cigarettes, pint of milk, loaf of bread, found the right credit card and remembered the right pin number my 15 minutes might have passed!
