Red Alert - Toilet Thread - Refilling a SOG Filter

With SOG filters costing €24 or £25 over here I thought I'd have a look at refilling one. Took longer to source the charcoal pellets than do the job.
£6 for 600 gm of active charcoal pellets enough for 2 refills.

Cut a 21mm hole with a hole cutter.

Emptied out and refilled with fresh charcoal pellets.

Cut a wine bottle cork in half to make a stopper, job done.

Make it neater..... Drill a 20mm hole and use a 20mm blind rubber grommet as used in electrical socket boxes.

I thought the whole idea of a SOG system was to forget about the filter and use the ensuing fumes to prevent other vans from parking too close...

For activated charcoal try aquatic shops next time Lenny, they are used in fillters for fish tanks and I’m guessing they will do the same thing..

Plenty of aquatic shops around and on line ...

Now you tell me.

It actually came down to what size hole cutters & what I had to fit them, the original idea was to use a rubber boat bung. No one can see it when fitted in the double floor.

On my old van Lenny the SOG went through the roof and I don’t recall there being a filter.
On the new van there is no vent in the roof, so I’m guessing it goes through the floor.
Does that mean I’ve got a filter somewhere like yours?

Roof vented no filter, if it's through the floor yes it's the green canister filter.
That's if you have a SOG, you may just have the Thetford vent where the filter is under the cassette.
We ordered the SOG then found it came with the Thetford one anyway.

Robert, you may have the Thetford equivalent which always vents through the floor. If it comes on with the first press of the flush button it is the Thetford one. In that case the filter is in a compartment under the cassette.

Those are the original ones, if you have a factory fit they nearly always fit a roof or underfloor vent, manufacturers have been doing it that way for quite a few years now.
Had the door type in our first van nowhere near as good as the canister filters, also tried using the cooker hood filters, that gave very poor performance compared to the genuine filters.

How about a piece of motorcycle inner tube around the filter, to blank the hole off.
