Following on from my on going repairs to the mobility scooter, I struggled with my Hilka 30 watt soldering iron to unstick the 3205 mosfets from the board, a combination of lack of oomph and a crappy tip I think ?
Would any of you tinkerers suggest a decent, general purpose iron ? I had a quick look on the usual sites, but it's a bit of a minefield with similar badged Chinese efforts at varying prices ?

I bought an antex 100w beast for bigger jobs, never failed yet, in fact I often switch it off while using as it gets VERY hot. I'll look it up....

It depends on how much heat it take to solder any item.
They are all much of a muchness unless you are using them daily.
Generally 30W 0r 60W - you could need both.

I like the look of this one and cheap as chips

Weller , but don’t get one that’s too powerful for circuit board work, no more than 60w, 40 is ideal.

the tip needs to be kept clean and a small dab of solder applied before use.

multicore solder, which already contains flux is best for this work, and easier to clean up after.

modern solders will be lead free, so fumes are less noxious, but still don’t breath them in…

Lidl and Aldi often have adjustable temperature soldering irons. Go on to their website to order if not on display at the moment.
