our Motorhome is a 1993 classic Hymer S670 on a Mercedes 410D base and it’s tax classification is Private Light Goods, it’s revenue weight is 3090kg on my V5. My question is would I be better off reclassifying as Private Heavy Goods? Has anyone got recent experience of doing this and does it affect the MOT status? Thanks in advance. Mark aka Badger 🦡

What are the axle weights on your Hymer plate as that will be what defines what you can do, if the axles total over 3500kg you should be able to do it.
You will be restricted to lower speed limits abroad.
No change to MOT it will still be Class 4 but you will have fewer choices of places to get an MOT.

Are you sure about this Lenny...

My axle weights are 1750kg and 1850kg .. total 3,600kg
The MAM is 3,300kg

If I were stopped and weighed over 3,300kg I would be done for overweight.. .. irrespective of total axle weights on the plate

Also, why would he have fewer places for an MOT if there is no change, it's still class 4 ..?

Your vehicle would have to be up plated first and if that's possible you would also need a C1 license, you would need to speak to someone like svtech to see what is required to up plate your van.

yes, I am aware of all that , wasn't my question

you can't just go ahead without up-plating ( as I said in my first post )

as Lenny suggested ..or I misunderstood his post

But you haven't uprated yours.
As for MOT a lot of places only have a licence for a max of 3500kg.

Why is that? I thought the only limitation was ‘will it fit’ ?

Most likely lift capacity.
Many test stations will have a 3.5t lift as the few PHGV they could do wouldn't warrant the extra cost of a heavier capacity lift.

Our local commercial only has a 3.5t lift and don't have a licence for doing MOT over the pit as commercial wagons have to use a DVSA test station for plating.

The axel weights are 1: 1700kg, 2: 3200. Max weight is 4600kg. However I was under the impression that it was the revenue weight that determines which tax class you are. Re speed abroad what would that be? Thanks

My van’s max weight is 4600kg , but not usually fully loaded when being mot’ed , however luckily my normal mot centre has a 5000kg lift.

If that is correct you could uprate to 4600kg. Are you sure that the 4600 is not Gross Train Weight?

France 80 kph on normal roads (most are anyway), 110 on motorways, Spain 90 on motorways, every country is different.
