Is it normal for the glow plug heater light to come on for a while after the engine has started, Merc v6 3ltr 2009 ?

I wouldn't have thought so, but I'm sure someone with specific knowledge will be along soon to confirm.
How long does it stay on for after starting ?

Do you wait for it to go off prior to starting?
I.e. does it go out you start then comes back on?

My 2008 Passat ( not got it now ) had a similar thing.
On some vehicles of that time the glow plug warning light also indicates other things.
In my case there were 2 faults, glow plug harness fault and an emissions sensor.
Took ages to find the problem.

Hi if its on a fiat based model my 64plate ducato did same thing, had tested and showed glow plug harness had broke down and 1 glow plug had given up.

That’s interesting, put up a post on the same subject and got no answers, my 21 plate Fiat 2.3 is now showing glow plug light when I turn on ignition, flashes then goes off, once I then start the engine it stays off . Only recently started showing this light , think I need to get it into garage for repair. Is your Fiat a 2.3?

It’s an indicator to warn you that you have a glow plug failure.

Mercedes made a bad job of mine. They are pretty fragile and hard to remove. So heavy handed mechanics tend to snap them.

I had a fleet of Mercedes’ vans and they were often stuck in the Mercedes yard waiting repairs to damaged heads.

On one of my V6 motorhomes, Frankia. Enza Mercedes’ Trafford park (now e-star Mercedes). Replaced one of my heater plugs. They broke it and helicoiled it. The heater plug blew out on the M25, dropped red hot onto vacuum and diesel pipes.

Van had to be towed away to nearest London dealer who refused to repair the plug issue and said they would fit a new cylinder head. Repair cost quoted was over £10,000.

We were stranded, heading for Benelux. Had to get a hire car. Easter weekend. Major battle with enza Trafford park etc.

Unless you are getting staring issues. Leave well alone
