A club I am a member of is planning a rally for their 2024 AGM. The chosen site have asked for a risk assessment.

Rather than start from scratch with a blank piece of paper does anyone have such a thing done for a previous rally and would be willing to share it? I am sure the risks must be common to almost all rallies - fire, electrics, tripping over EHU cables etc.

Many thanks in anticipation! :)

Thanks Jim I thought you would have encountered this requirement before. :)

I always found it odd at work when working on a site I had never even been to I had to assess and write a risk assessment , surely most risks are site related 🤔 logic would say the site owner should be warning you of such risks

Just another level of red tape we can’t avoid

And yes I do take safety seriously but like most of us we stay safe by constant dynamic assessment 👍

Use to do them for all my sites, Heathrow Airport was about 40 pages long😳😳
Basically you have to treat the operatives as complete morons and tell them every single step of how to do the job and the risks involved.

It’s to protect the you and the firm more than anything as if even the slightest thing goes wrong someone’s after everything you have!!

Assess for these ten points and you'll pretty much cover it all
  1. Location of the rally and the site itself. Access Egress.
  2. Weather-related risks such as heat, wind, lightning, and severe storms, flooding
  3. Health risks such as communicable diseases, foodborne illnesses, and medical emergencies
  4. Fire risks such as open flames and volatile fuels
  5. Environmental risks such waste pollution, Elsan points, wildlife, farm animal encounters, and natural disasters
  6. Crowd-related risks such as vehicle and pedestrian traffic, noise, etc
  7. Safety risks such as personal injury, theft, and vandalism
  8. Emergency response procedures and availability of medical, fire, and emergency services
  9. Accessibility for emergency vehicles, including clear entrance and exit routes. 6m etc
  10. Trip hazards et al

Any more than 5 significant risks I'd bin 'em. The whole system has been wrecked by those that copy and paste generic twaddle that hides the wood for the trees just to show a facade of compliance. Rant over..

Organistaions like the HSE just don't know when to stop. They have done a fantastic job with industries like farming and building, saving thousands of lives. Rather than stay there and bask in that glory as the heros they are; they just keep going and going with sillier and sillier demands, till it's stupid and people kick back.

Dont forget about dogs that might be there 👍

We brought in risk assessments for club camping in the vw world many years ago, not to be picky or over careful but purely to make more people aware of what they do and any consequences of their actions. There were some scary fires that made a lot of people acutely aware of the risks.
