Rally’s ... dare I ask what goes on?

Here goes with both feet i was just walking Marleymoo and thinking I might go to the Chester rally to loose my cherry (thats obviously my rally cherry the other 1 went a very long time ago) and then find this thread and im now wondering is Chester going to be by best first 1 or are other smaller ones that are just over a weekend?

You'll be fine at Chester! As with all Funster rallies, you can join in or keep to yourself. Don't see groups of people as cliques, see them as friends that you haven't met yet.

Is it the food festival 1 ?

Actually you would probably be better with a small informal rally at first. Our first one was at the Peterborough show with over 100 other funsters' motorhomes. Only got talking to half a dozen, as most people sat with friends they knew. That put us off a bit. The next one we went to was a small 15 van meet and we all sat in one large circle talking to everybody while DuxDeluxe served the Pimms.
I agree with this. My first rally as a Fun member was at Malvern. We were not actually pitched on the Fun field but we took a walk around and tried to say hello. But nobody knew who we were and so it was not so easy and there were so many units there.
The rally I organised last August was my first for Fun. We were limited to 30 people by the covid regulations and so it was easy to chat to everyone. There were some people who had met each other before lots of times, and there were some people who were new. Because of the limited numbers, and because we were all in the same covid boat, it was easier to strike up conversations and make sure that no one was left out.
Because of the regulations, I was not able to organise any sort of ice breaker which I normally would do. Quackers had planned to light a campfire so we could all have sat around together but that was not allowed. However cliffandger Geraldine brought us all together with song.

Chester is a good one to get your feet wet (perhaps not literally this year)... lots of options. Food Fest, Chester as well as the rally...

I just found out yesterday via a local history website that on the river Tyne downriver of the bridges at the rivers widest point there USED to be an official metal sign on the bank which said "Jarrow Slake swinging area". It was to inform ships captains that they were at the best point to turn their ships around after loading or unloading. The sign is now long gone, as are most of the ships, but I bet it would have fetched a fortune on Ebay.

For those that don't believe me look below;

I think theres numerous videos on motorhome get togethers. All bring something different. Mum always taught me " If your willing to be friendly you need never be lonely " So although theres no pressure on you to join in you really wont gain much by turning up and sitting at your van all day. A little effort can reap rewards. (y) Just make it known to organiser you are new.

All rally's are different which is what keeps it fresh.
The Warner's show's are all about the Motorhome and entertainment.

Shewsbury Rally's are good a nice location and a easy walk along the River into town. Shrewsbury has one of the the best markets indoorI have ever come across and not to be missed on a visit

If you can sometimes put a two or three together you get to see different places but at a lot less cost than normal campsites.

Chester Rally is good because not only do you get the food fayre you are a easy walk into the centre of a beautiful city with river cathedral and of course the famous walls surrounding the city which make a good walk, you can cycle along the river in to Wales or to Ellesmere port to the boat museum lots of different things to do.

Dare I ask if any or all of these rallies are children friendly? Yes, I'm the mad one with a 2 & 6 y/o trying to holiday in an old Burstner!
Quite fancy fancy attending some of these in the future, when we're allowed out (no pampas grass though 😯)

Yes most are although we don't tend to get so many these days. They have always been made welcome from what we have seen.

If it's a motorhome show rally there seem to be a number. Smaller rallies, possibly a good idea to check with the organiser but the rally description should make it clear that it's adults only. Certainly had children at the Thetford Bash, a fishing and shopping meet, and at New Year.

Thanks Meanders, that's good to know. Just trying to work out costs on the various rally threads, if any. Also what fits in with term times & can we arrive mid rally!

It's very rare that start and end dates are fixed. We had a grandson living with us when we started with Fun so often the last to arrive on a Friday and generally had to leave on Sunday to be back for school. The AV Tech

PS: What field of AV are you in?

With young children, less pampas, more Pampers? Advantages of being a grandparent is the ability to hand the child back when he needs serviced ... Mind you, at a Rally, there's always the option of suspending the child upside down from a whirlygig washing line and using the hosepipe for the cleaning up, or using a pressure washer if you have an inverter ... Not as delicate as Cotton Wool and Baby Lotion, but a lot quicker and more environmentally friendly (y)

Haha, that would be great, but we're the parents! Would we be the youngest grown ups there? 😁
Dunno. We're still doing our month's probation after joining the Forum and we won't know until the end of the week whether we've got a motorhome ... Probably bad form to arrive in the family car!

I always remember one of the stewards saying
when we left a faction on a rally
don’t forget the 11 clock rule . He never said what we could do after 11 clock but hay ho
I’ve been going on rally’s since the 1990 it’s still free to do want when you want As long as it before 11 pm I guess
happy days
