Hi all.
I have recently had my brand new Renault Master H3L4 professionally converted… with Certificates for Gas, Electrics.

Can anyone recommend an Insurer for such a conversion & do I need to change the details on the V5C?
Many thanks in advance.
Jacqui

Looks good you dont often see a professional conversion on the reault
I have used Campton insurance company. They ask for an engineers report form to be filled in to value it. To then insure it for a specific amount. My last van not my current one ,i went to a motorhome dealers and asked them to value it they were happy to

You will not get it registered as a Motor Caravan unfortunately, it will be a Van with windows so you remain stuck with van speed limits. :(

Try AIB insurers, they tend to work with more underwriters than most and have never failed to get me cover on some of my quirker vans, with business use and towing etc

Do you have any advice re the V5C? It now has 2 seats not the original 3 & it’s no longer a Panel Van 🧐

Some insurance companies will ask you to try and change the vehicle type to Motor Caravan (or whatever the actual phrase is), but it will probably come back as Van With Windows, which won't matter. Some just like you to try, then look at the photo's themselves and if it looks like a motorhome, they class it as one. Other companies may be happy with just photo's.

LV are quite good and very flexible.

Any pics of the interior? Looks nice from the outside (y)

Many thanks Jim.
I’m not concerned about the speed limits… we believe in taking in the views wherever we go 🙂
I will certainly try AIB 👍
Regarding the V5C, I assume I’ll have to get that changed from ‘Panel Van’ to ‘Van with windows’? 🧐

Lovely looking van!

The government guidelines for qualifying as a motorhome are at

At a quick glance you would have to get some graphics added to both sides of the van to differentiate it from "ordinary" vans

The covering letter that we got back from the DVLA when we converted our T5 said it had to have an awning fitted as well. You have be able to look at the vehicle and 'know' it is a campervan from the outside.

This is after sending in umpteen photos of the conversion, it came back as van with windows.

We are insured with Adrian Flux, we also had to send them pictures of it as well.

That won't work unfortunately. A converted T6 owner recently sent one in with graphics saying this is a Motor Caravan, result...van with windows.

It appears the DVLA are now working to an unwritten rule that by default all van conversions, unless done from new, by a major supplier, are 'vans with windows'

Recently one of the well known suppliers of PVC's (built from new, with graphics) had all their production described as 'vans with windows'

I thinks unless it has a boxy motorhome body (and awning, graphics etc) then anything van shape is a 'van with windows'

Oh wow… thank you ever so much for the link. Why didn’t I think of looking at DVLA 🫣🫣
We are in the process of deciding what graphics to use… may even allow the conversion guys to apply an extended version of their logo to René 🧐

Many thanks… with all the conversions being done, I suppose the DVLA are having to be very stringent.
It’s a minefield but I’ll get there… with the help of all you lovely folk 🤗🤗

Hmmm… interesting. We used a professional conversion company so I’ll have a chat with the main guy… he’s bound to know. Thank you for your time & advice though 🤗
