I was contacted on Saturday by the storage site owner as my motorhome alarm was going off. 20 minutes later I arrived to find that the low vehicle battery had set the alarm off, then the constant alarm had drained it. I had replaced the battery in January 2019 and was able to obtain a full refund. I have purchased the slightly stronger Bosch equivalent but don’t expect this to last during the winter without taking the motorhome home every few weeks.
So, to resolve this issue, and to make it easier for us to access the motorhome and therefore more likely we will use it more often we are planning to move.
The reason I have started this thread is to ask for advice. Others may have had the same dilemma.
Factors: our two sons live in Nottingham and London respectively, and our daughter lives in Norwich. She is vulnerable with Crohn’s decease and only works part time. We would like to be nearer her (80 miles away at present).
We can afford a nice house/bungalow near Norwich but have been horrified by the new build developments to the North and East of Norwich, and in Hethersett. At the moment we are looking at Wymondham and Attleborough. We would like to be within 10 miles of a swimming pool, and the same distance from a large supermarket.
The problem is storage of the motorhome by the house or bungalow. We don’t want a large garden, in fact would be happy not to have much of a garden, but need a large space next to the property where a motorhome would be allowed to be parked. New builds seem to be out for this reason. Any advice on what to look for In the region of £400,000. We have been looking on-line but we can’t afford a large property which may have the parking space, and smaller properties seem to have less parking.

Houses being built everywhere at the moment. Have you looked at fakenham way ?

New builds do tend to be on postage stamp size plots unless your paying big bucks and even then not large
Could you look for an older house, it'll almost certainly be better built as a bonus

Ivory55 We considered Cromer, Fakenham and all the way to Sheringhan and even King’s Lynn but want to be near my daughter who is in Norwich and will never move😳

Figaro Yes we think an older house would be more suitable but most are out of our price range, and we don’t want the responsibility of a large garden, especially as we hope to be travelling for six months each year. We don’t know have to filter for “older” houses on on-line property search sites. Is there a way?

As in interim until you find out what you are doing, why not get a portable solar panel (assuming your MH is stored outside). We had the same problem (ours is inside a barn) it went as flat as a Haddock after about 8 weeks. We got a 25w panel of Amazon and clipped it onto the main battery. The farmer very kindly let me clip the panel onto the barn side. Never had a problem since no matter how long it has been left. We even keep the Growler alarm on now too.
Good luck with your search 👍

BnBJwf That’s a good idea. I have a solar panel on the roof but it’s obviously not giving me enough. I need to research adding more cheaply without messing up the smart controllers

Is it actually charging through to the main battery? It does not usually take a lot to keep the main battery topped up. It might be worth checking over what is going where with multimeter.

BnBJwf I have a multi meter, Just need to learn how to use it! Will give it a go.

Many systems prioritise the leisure battery. And the sun is very low in the winter, so a roof mounted panel isn't terribly effective.

A couple of friends have rewired the solar controller so that it favours the starter battery. One of them takes the leisure battery home over the winter months.

Perhaps a smaller house builder might be more sympathic to your needs than one
of the big boys? Show them your needs and your serious and they might be interested. Perhaps one if the how homes with a bigger than usual plot?

Jamesh Thanks for the input, never thought of that. There are loads of new builds at early stages so definitely a possibility. We will sound out a few on our next recycling👍
