Hello

I've just finished a van conversion and have fitted an LPGShop.co.uk underslung tank myself, I went to Asda to fill it up for the first time and It won't fill.
It fills a couple of pence and then stops, is this because the tank needs to be depressurized first or what?

When I got home I turned the knob to pressurise the gas line to the cooker and it hisses and I can smell gas but the burner doesn't work.

Any suggestions?

Regards

Not sure if you have filled up at an LPG pump previously but you need to keep the Button pushed in constantly until the Tank is filled.

Ya I've done it correctly at the pump I'm sure, connected the knozzle turned clockwise to lock and locked the trigger in place and then held button to fill, it starts to fill and then stops immediately

Is the tank multi-valve positioned correctly? If so check that the float isn't stuck. The air in the tank prior to filling has no noticeable effect.

There is usually a little badge where the tank should be positioned. If it is not at the correct angle and the float moves to soon or already up the tank wont fill.

Ok this is a picture of the tank in place but not fitted from before, not sure what you mean by being in the correct position?

I haven't checked for leaks yet, I was planning to fill it a little and then check after, the tank is turned off now yes

Does the top and bottom matter?

I have fitted it upside down but how would that matter if i flip it over the tank is still on its side

Have you tried giving the non-return valve in the filler a tap. Once or twice mine has jammed. A firm tap to break the seal so that the pressure of the gas pump can overcome it and allow the gas to flow in.

Some LPG pumps just aren't strong enough to open be tank nr valves. Try a different filling station before trying anything else.

yes It is upside down It has a float similar to a ball cock. If upside down the float has shut off the inlet so you cannot fill.

Oh dear ⚠️
Upside down .
We are seeing more and more seriously bad gas installations but not just from diyers ⚠️

Oh look ⚠️
No surprise here
The Update
The 'Stako' gas tank is suspended using two plastic-covered steel straps which fix to a simple steel frame which in turn is bolted securely to the van floor.

Update October 2013 • The two straps supplied with the Stako tank are not really adequate when the tank is suspended in this manner. The straps are also prone to rusting inside the plastic sheathing. For safety, it is recommended that a third, and more substantial strap with fixing clamp, be added (see Tinley Tech in Suppliers for details). One supplier (Autogas, I believe) can supply more robust stainless steel straps to replace the Stako frame/straps. (Note, a number of Pro converters have fitted these tanks in the past using the Stako frame/straps)

I did not like the idea of hanging my tank from a couple of straps and seeing it bouncing down the road, so I made two brackets from 50mm x 6mm flat bar and it's bolted to the van cross members with sixteen 8mm bolts via 8mm steel rivnut.

Our old 1999 Hymer, which had a bulk gas tank fitted at the factory, was fitted with thick gauge metal clamps, which came up through the single floor and were secured with thick gauge metal spreader plates, so there was no chance of it coming off unaided.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

mot petrol and deisel tanks are on two straps

Yup, and one of the two straps holding the fuel tank on my Nissan Navara had rotted through leaving the back of my tank hanging down big time.
I don't know when it gave way as it was pointed out to me when it went up on the lift for last year's MOT. :Eeek:
