Private, Personalised, Cherished Number plate.....yes or No.

Have had mine since 1984 when bought a 2 year old Capri.
Birmingham registered
Shortened version of first name/single digit/year suffix.
Now on 8th or 9th car
I'm happy with it!

Personalised registrations seem to be mandatory in North Wales... Don't see the point myself but each to his own

I used to teach Bentley apprentice mechanics and on my journey to see my students at Jack Barclay Bentley in Battersea I used to pass a parking space on the Thames embankment with two cars which had the registrations "2 B' and "NOT 2B".... The double parking space probably cost more than my house....

Seem to compulsory here in South Wales, most if my neighbours have them!

I have four: NASH FLY, JN69 YUM and J4 JNU plus a 1964 'B' suffix plate on my Royal Enfield Continental GT535

it's a bit fun for not a lot of money & makes it easy to remember the reg number

I also have a HAT ##L but that is an original number....

Thinking of one.

but bit like changing from apple to android.

can i really do it?

and if the vehicle is written off , does the insurance company own the number plate?

Have one on a 2019 car which is attractive to thieves but by de-badging and putting an 04 obscure personal reg on the car it can sit anywhere without undue attention.
Conversely no one knows the age of my van.

Agree with AJM2 that the right plate can be a sound investment. Others like mine are just for a bit of fun and being different. My plates for my name and worth bugger all to most. Have M12 BLO (MR BLO) on the van. Was looking for M125 (MRS) BLO for the horsebox but management said she wouldn’t drive it. Can’t think why.
My old girl has the following which cost her £700 or £800. She’s been offered more than 10x that on more than one occasion. It was originally in the same font as the manufacturer but DVLA letter with the threat of withdrawal put pay to that.

Good point about ownership of the number plate in the event of a write off. Got me worried now, not that I’m intending to write it off. I suppose it’d be okay if the insurers added the value of the plate to any settlement.

One advantage of a personalised plate on the motorhome is that I don't have to keep changing my 'Dart charge' registration as the number is always the same.

This generally only applies when it's safe to go to la belle France.

Problem is they still require the make & model to correspond with the number?

When insuring you need to notify them that the number plate has a value of £xxxxxxxxxxx which needs to be included in the vehicle valuation in the event that any unforeseen reason meaning that you are unable to retain or transfer it from the right off/stolen vehicle to another you own.
You also need to advise them that you own the plate & at no time will it ever be classed as part of the vehicle.

I sold my first number plate VAN 11 in 1971. If it had been the other way around I could have retired.:giggle:

Sold the one off the vehicle I came out here in 18 years ago.

The plate and car are two separate things you can’t loose a plate, unless you sell the car with it on that car, in case of an accident you can just put the plate on retention unless you are incapacitated, then it doesn’t matter 🙂

Interesting point - in fact you don't ever 'own' a UK vehicle registration - DVLA owns them all!

You effectively have a licence/permission from DVLA to 'display' a particular registration on your vehicle.

In theory, DVLA could decide to withdraw any registration it chooses. However, I'm unaware of any specific examples of it having done so, after the registration has been issued - but I believe it may have happened on rare occasion.

Thanks for the assurance

I pass them regularly - Aston and Range Rover.

I was 'The Boy' in North London on the Tonibell van in the early 60s, and we would stop close by Max Bygrave's house where two Bentleys were on the drive. MB1 and MB2!
