I have a TP link TL-MR6400 router which I am using now in Spain with a Spanish SIM card. We are on EHU now but I would like to use the router with its Spanish sim while we are travelling and so will only have the 12v battery supply. Can I get an adaptor they plugs into the cigarette lighter type sockets? Does it have to be a specific TP one. The specifications say the power supply to the router are 9 volt / .85amps. I am thinking I may be able to use one of the cables I have for my LED light in the awning or even the Avtex TV or sound bar which both have these sort of plugs. I don’t want to blow the thing or ruin a cable but looking for a simple option. It’s not something I understand enough about I’m afraid. Thanks

According to the TP website the power supply requirement is 9v DC, so you just need a voltage regulator 12vdc to 9vdc from eBay or the like and use the connector from the mains adaptor, ensuring polarity is correct.
that’s what I will be doing on mine.

I’m being a bit thick here I think! I understand about voltage regulator being needed but will that not then have to plug into the 23v cigarette type sockets in the van when we are running on battery and not on EHU. I know at home I have something which has a 3 pin socket on one side and which plugs into cigarette lighter so can run something off that but it’s at home and I’m in Spain! Any chance of a link or photo of the sort of thing I might need please

It will need to be wired into something, yes.

i will be wiring into a 12v socket supply, so rather than plugging it in, it will always be on. You could fit an inline switch or wire via a plug and socket if you preferred.

This would work.

Yes. I was hoping there would be a simple fix using a cable which plugged into router one end and cigarette lighter socket the other like the alternative cables for the TV.

Check the Chinese shops for something like above .
Plugs into the 12v DC cigarette socket and can be adjusted for various voltage outputs.

Posts crossed. Yes something like that is what I was thinking. I have a number of things that do plug into the 12v sockets such as TV, sound bar, couple of rechargeable LED lights and even a hoover. I will have a look at what size plug tings they have and what volts/amps they are for. Surely if similar I could use one of them.

Didn’t realise you could get variable outputs. Thanks to both of you I will have a look.

Thanks. Hadn’t looked closely enough as using phone not iPad at minute.

almichie tonka Been having a good look at what is available and what I can buy here. Would something like this work. My router has a Spanish plug and this is available on Amazon Es with sockets to take one of them. Can I assume that if I plug this into the 12 volt supply Incan then just plug the router into it.
Thanks really appreciate all your help.

Yes you can, but it will take more from the battery that using a voltage converter

That's an inverter, so your will go 12vdc up to 240v mains and then your router adaptor will be converting it back down to 9vdc...
It will work, waste some power in the conversion but it would be very minimal.
If it was me I would prefer to just go with the 12v adjustable adapter.

Thanks for the explanation. The problem is I can get things from Amazon ES via a friend here but to have something sent from UK is a nightmare. Have been looking in Chinese shops today bu not found anything yet. Will persist in my hunt if places here and preset above as last resort. Once again. Thanks

Meant so say that I can’t find anything suitable on Amazon ES. Still I have a month to sort it so on a mission.

i would assume your existing router supply cable is a three pin plug and a small plug that plugs in to the router if yes you need to ditch that and use one of the ones linked to above from lighter socket direct to the router

tonka brilliant. I couldn’t find that anywhere.
mitzimad yes that is the plan although as I bought the router here in Spain it has the European 2 pin one. Hence another reason to go with the 12 volt and just use the 12v socket I have spare.

Whoops. Think your right. Never looked at the voltage outputs, they are converting up not down. I assume for use with laptops etc.
Back to the drawing board.

Well spotted.
