We're staying at Playa Santiago, on the southern tip of La Gomera, a small sub-tropical volcanic island in the Canarian archipelago. It's a 50-minute fast ferry ride west from Los Cristianos on Tenerife, but feels a world away from the concrete and razzmatazz of its big brother.

Sadly we're sans van, which has had to stay at home in Blighty on this occasion. But for any intrepid Funsters who fancy an extended adventure in the warmth of the winter sun, I reckon a tour of these Atlantic islands would take some beating. There are direct ferry crossings from southern Spain to Gran Canaria and Tenerife I believe. And all severn inhabited islands are interconnected by ro-ro ferries.

The scenery on La Gomera is breathtaking and the roads generally very good, albeit with plenty of hill climbing. It is sparsely populated and boasts its own extensive rainforest in the Garajonay National Park. But all of the islands have their individual attractions, each varying significantly from one to another.

Although regular visitors to Gomera ourselves, we have explored all of the others too, with the exception of the smallest, El Hiero. But it is the less populated ones that fascinate us most and we would recommend to others, with or without a motorhome. We especially enjoyed La Palma. There aren't many campsites, or indeed any, on the smaller islands. But there are lots of places to stopover, either in the villages or out in the wilds. There were a couple of campers at the back of the huge, almost empty car park, less than 100 metres from the sea, in Playa Santiago this morning. The whole place is relaxed and the locals friendly.

I'm sure there are some Funsters who have brought their vans over to the Canaries? Wonder if anyone has made it to La Gomera?

Lovely post, thank you. We've never been to the Canaries but fancy a bit of warmth. Some of the more popular islands put us off a bit but this island looks great. Will check it out further.

We flew in to Tenerife South Airport (where all the UK flights arrive) and picked up a rental car there. It's a 20 minute drive to the port at Los Cristianos on Tenerife, just under an hour on the ferry to San Sebastian, La Gomera, then we drove 45 minutes through the mountains to Playa Santiago. A single fare on the ferry for two of us and the car was £83.87, and then the same again to go back. We don't bother to book the ferry in advance, just buy tickets on arrival at the port. I think there are about six daily crossings each way, operated by two separate companies (Armas & Fred Olsen) - so we just catch the 'next' boat.

Just ask if you'd like any more info. (y)

Been to the Canaries on several cruises but nearly always to the tourist islands and never La Palma but we did visit La Gomera on one a few years ago. The few hours we spent there certainly made us want more. Oh, and I left my hat on a table somehwere there! :(

Years ago we hired a villa in La Palma up in the hills, old colonial style house with a fantastic overgrown garden, avocados bananas etc. Absolutely loved it, explored lots, saw the Observatories etc. Great place. We fancy The Azores don’t think we would try taking the MH though.

Lanzarote is cool - very envious of you living there. :giggle:

Did you enjoy riding on La Gomera?

And have you been to El Hiero?

Had several trips to Gran Canaria in the past. Always hired a car so we could explore the mountainous interior which was fabulous. Sunflower guides are great for walks, I expect there is one for La Gomera.

Thanks for the postcard. We have been to La Gomera and agree about it being quieter. We have also been to La Palma(twice) and spent last Christmas in a quiet NW part of Gran Canaria.

I think we prefer La Palma, but of course the southern part had a 'facelift' in 2021 from the volcano eruption.

I am interested in why you hired the car in Tenerife and paid two ferry tickets for it, as we hired in La Gomera.

La Gomera was frustrating for riding.
To go to anywhere else, we had to ride up into the cold wet clouds.
The damp hampered our fun ;)

Howard H did a 70(?)day MH tour of the Canaries in 2019(?). Not sure if he included La Gomera.

La Palma is our favourite Canary Island!!

It's almost twenty years since our first visit to the island - it was a day trip, while we were on Tenerife - and on that occasion, we had a car for the day from the port at San Sebastian.

We'd travelled over on a small high speed passenger-only ferry, long since gone out of business.

As an aside, it's the only time I've ever had 2 cars on hire at the same time - one we left parked up in Tenerife and the second on Gomera!

But, getting the car at TFS is cheaper and much more convenient. Rentals on the island are more expensive. And surprisingly, taking the car on the ferry is cheap. The actual breakdown of the fare: Driver and car - Euro 57.09 plus 1 Adult - Euro 36.44. So the charge for the car is only Euro 20.65 each way. :giggle:

We were able to call in at Lidl for some basic groceries and fresh milk (no fresh on the island) on the way to the port on Tenerife. And having the car meant no need to mess about with buses, taxis or other transfers to get from the airport to Los Cristianos.(y)

Yes, now I recall chatting to Howard at the time about his trip. Not sure if he did Gomera or not - think he may have done?

Oh yes. Up in the hills always low cloud and damp.
Funny, on our first trip - just for the day - picked up a car on the quayside when we arrived. It was lovely bright and sunny, but the agent insisted on showing us where the light switch and the wiper switch was... ? Weird, we thought does he know something we don't about the weather forecast? ;)

Of course, in half an hour we were to discover why.

It's odd how there's no circular road on Gomera and to get to most places you have to go up in the clouds first. ;):giggle:

Where we stay in the south has a fabulous micro climate in the rain shadow. A very sunny spot. (y)

Enjoyed reading this, we just got back from Tenerife and la Gomera 2 days ago: both great places to visit and enjoy (not in MH, just a package hol). We were hoping to see plenty of birdlife, but missed the unique pigeons, blue finches etc entirely! Didnt mind because the islands are brilliant anyway. Been several times now, saw lots of MHomes, parked up around Tenerife, also in several 'depots'? between the airport and Costa Adeje...presumably for hire? Or maybe just stored for owners...

We went to La Gomera many years ago, loved it went round the island on a small coach tour stopping off for lunch in a mountain restaurant and getting demonstrations of the whistling language 😍 yes loved it. 👍 Bob.

If that is where I think it is, we had our last Family Holiday there, in 2019, for Pete’s 70th Birthday.

A week with the kids, and then a week on our own, to give Pete’s wallet a rest, and for us to recover and relax!

A beautiful HPB place, love the photos, happy memories, thank you…

It is indeed the Holiday Property Bond's resort on the island, and lovely it is too. Always feels like somewhere even more exotic than it already is... ;). :giggle:

Glad you enjoyed your trip. I think this is about our sixth, but first since 2019 before the pandemic. (y) We should be coming back in October (points free ).

Have you been Bondies long?

Yes, Pete and his first wife joined in the very early days, and I also joined, about 10 years ago.

They are a great Company to deal with, and following Pete’s passing, his and his late wife‘s Bonds have been passed on to their daughter, so the tradition continues.

My son will benefit from mine, but hopefully, not just yet! I’m off to Tigh Mor in June with my son and his family.

I’ve points in my 70 day account, which need using, so on the lookout for a break, later in the year.

Well done on points free!

We visited La Gomera some years ago on all of things a SAGA geological holiday! But it is indeed a magical island.

Geologically, from what I can remember. It was all once one very big volcano which has since been massively eroded.

Di, so sorry to hear about Pete's passing.

Nonetheless, pleased you are continuing to use your Bond, and able to share it's benefits with the family! Tigh Mor is definitely appealing - we live in the south-west so travelled there in our camper and combined the stay with some Scottish touring in the van.

And yes I agree, HPB is a great organisation and has some fab places. We also signed up about ten years ago. A good investment. :giggle:

We frequently 'mix and match' with the van and the Bond, especially in France and Alfaix, in Almeria.

70-day points can be a challenge to use, hope you get fixed up with a suitable holiday.

Are you a member of the independent Bondie Facebook group? We've found lots of handy tips on there.

Best wishes, Mike

Think you are probably correct about it being one big volcano. And although it may have eroded, the summit is still approaching 5,000 feet, which is pretty high for such a small island. ;) 😄

Great that you had an excellent trip to Tenerife and Gomera - we reckon it's a lovely time of year to visit. (y)

Interesting that you saw a lot of vans on Tenerife, previously we've seen plenty parked up on Gran Canaria, even right in the heart of Play del Ingles.

I am probably being a bit simplistic, a more detailed description is given here:

Wow, that's got a lot of technical scientific information - way beyond my aged brain power, but interesting nonetheless. I just know the landscape and scenery is impressive.

And it's nice and warm in winter...

Thank you.

We also mixed and matched, the one trip that always springs to mind was taking our van to Italy, and spending time at Stigliano.
We’d contacted HPB, to check that there would be space to park the van for a week, and we were assured there would be. Quite right there was, but, we hadn’t factored in the narrowness of some the lanes approaching the HPB site. I will never forget me walking backwards and guiding Pete and the van through, with inches to spare either side!
When we arrived, there was another Motorhome, of a similar size, enjoyed comparing notes…

Also been to Alfaix, parked at the top of the site, convinced we’d burn the engine out!

Re Facebook, yes, I’m on there, and lots of information, very helpful.

Cheers.

Gosh, the access to Stigliano is tricky - it's challenging in a car! I think we've been three times, but knew from the first visit that the van might be a step too far for us.

But we did manage to stay at Viehhofen, Austria with it.

IMG_20170605_131328917~2.jpg

And I know what you mean about the drive up the hill at Alfaix. ;) It seems particularly popular with motorhomers there. :giggle:
