There was a recent letter in the CAMC magazine about someone being charged £50 for entering the relatively new Clean Air Zone on the way to the Portsmouth Ferry Port. I live near Portsmouth and just checked with the Council. If you are going directly to the Continental Ferry Port and come down the M275 and get off at the roundabout and go directly into the Ferry Port, there is no charge. If you are going to the Isle of Wight Ferry, you would being entering the Zone and would be charged. If you go into the city for a visit and then go to the Port, you would be charged. There are no charges for "private vehicles", so I guess it depends on the size of your van and what your designation is. But £50 each way is a huge addition to the cost of the passage, so it is worth checking out before you plan your journey.

From the website:

Will I have to pay a charge?

It depends which vehicle you drive. Only buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and heavy goods vehicles (including some Motorhomes which are classed as Private Heavy Goods Vehicles) that are older than Euro 6 if diesel, and Euro 4 if petrol, will be charged.

You can get to the IOW ferry without entering the CAZ but it is a bit of a rigmarole. The easiest way is probably coming on to the island via A2030 and continuing south to the seafront and using the A288 towards Clarence Pier.

Our Motorhome is 2016 euro5+ 3.7t.
No charge

Sorry you are wrong. The side roads near the IOW ferry are in the zone. It looks like you can access coming past Viviers fish merchants but there are bollards stopping you. I went to the Island recently and had to go via Southampton.👍

Sneaky blighters. I have done a quick check and my 2016 Euro 5 Carthago is OK though. Not that I'm planning to visit the island now that I no longer have the yacht.

Interestingly, my 2004 Euro4 Boxer is shown as no charge in Portsmouth:

  • Nice One!
Reactions: TOT
Just put in my registration number to the government website and we are exempt from ALL clean air zones, for a 7 ton, 19 year old, LHD American RV that's great news, glad it was converted to run on lpg

Just had a look government website describes it as a 'van' despite registration document saying. Motorcaravan, it shows up as a motorcaravan on other government websites, weird.

I booked my ferry before I read this thread and we are off to IOW next week on Wightlink from Portsmouth. Is there a map showing how to get to ferry terminal avoiding the zone?

Just checked my Hymer it's £50 for Portsmouth and £100 for Bath. Listed as a Heavy goods vehicle for CAZ its a 3850 weight.

Just checked Wightlink website and they say there is no way to avoid the zone so that’ll be £50 on the way out and £50 on the way back!

Can't avoid it.
So does that mean the Brittany ferries departure is not in the zone ?
That is outside providing you come down the M275 and turn into the port from the roundabout.

You can change your booking, for a £5 fee, so it may be worth changing to the Lymington crossing instead.
Or just get Red Funnel from Southampton . . . . . Getting in to Lymington in the summer can be a pain.

I have discount from the site for Wightlink so I’d lose that if I change to Red Funnel, half a dozen of one and all that good stuff.

interesting, we are a Private HGV Motorhome, uprated to 4800kg and listed as “no charge” on the gov website.

Given the cost of ferries, the narrowish roads and now the CAZ, the IOW must be becoming increasingly less attractive. Not been there by public transport since I can't remember when. Think it may have been when crewing on a Round the Island race back in the sixties.

One of my daughters lived on the IOW for a couple of years, she called it Isle of Shite, she said the kids were terrible high use of drugs etc.

Same as many rural Southern Irish villages, can't buy a pint but can always get a gram!
