Autocorrect make pompei and Pompey :-) don’t get confused it’s the former we are interested in . Has anyone got experience of the 3 main camp sites there as their quality and reviews are a little off putting but I guess we feel we should go , unless someone has an alternative site / attraction we should go to ?

You aren't there for the campsite - go for the closest one out the front and enjoy the walk around.

We stayed at Area Sosta Camper Ametrano, it was €20 per night for secure parking behind gates, small site with a friendly host, and an easy walk into Pompeii.

When we went to Pompei, we stayed at Nube d’Argento campsite in Sorrento. It has a very tight turn in, so if coming from Sorrento, it’s recommended to go past the entrance, turn around and come back to it. We walked into Sorrento and caught the train to Pompei, we also used the train when we went to Herculaneum (well worth a visit).

Cheers

See Naples and Die they say…..the driving in that part of the country is appalling. More near misses in a day than a year on the M25 !

just like BMW drivers - Italians don't know what traffic indicators are for

I think it’s a regional thing, a bit like their attitude towards traffic signals - In Milan, traffic lights are an instruction, in Rome a suggestion and in Naples a Christmas decoration.

Just remember driving into Pompeii and there were a few Aires/campsites on the right , close to town .
They all seemed the same . Reasonable price , great location

I looked at that with street view - looked very clenchy - also couldn’t see where you could turn around :-)

Herculaneum great - wasn’t stripped of all frescos like Pompeii (much bigger).
The Vesuviana train runs up coast to Naples stopping at both so you could stop anywhere on the line.
Strongly recommend the archaeological museum of Naples which has all the artefacts found in Pompeii. If you’re not easily shocked the secret room houses all the shocking stuff!

We did the same. The journey from Pompei to the site in Sorrento was terrifying with tourist coach drivers determined to kill you and kamikazi scooter riders determined to kill themselves. Sorrento was a bit of a let down. More like British kiss me quick hats and fish and chips than Italian chique.

At Pompei pay extra for a English language guided tour group. Good for getting context and making sure you see the good bits. It is a huge site.

There are lots of other places to see in the area. Boat trip to Capri is a must but not on a Sunday like we did because it will be packed. And a trip along the Amalfi coast, but use the bus rather than driving yourself. Treat yourself coming back by boat, but it is expensive.

Naples is a must see but use the narrow gauge train to get there. Every car in the place has a dent in it. I reckon when they buy their new car the salesman kicks a dent in it free of charge.
