I am a newbie ex caravaner for 40years
Just traveled down the N10 from Poitiers and the signs say 3.5 ton 80 kilometres so I’m pottering along at that speed under the impression that it applies to motorhomes being that weight but it looks like I’m the only one as the other motorhomes are passing me doing 100 + , so I’m thinking does the sign mean vehicles over 3.5 ton, can somebody enlighten me please?

We travelled the N10 yesterday at 110km!! Although we are 4T we are only 6.8m therefore the 3.5T rules don’t apply to us🤣🤣🤣😎

Well they haven’t for the last 7 years. I think it’s safe to say if you aren’t over 3m tall, tag axel or have an Angle Mort sticker you will be fine!!!

The signs font have the lorry symbol on they so apply to all vehicles over 3500kgs, however the French version of a 3500kgs camping car is somewhat heavier than the rest of us.

Btw most of it is no overtaking for 3500kgs + as well

On the N10 the speed limit is 90km for vehicles over 3500kg. The 80km limit is only on a few sections where there is crossovers in the centre for local traffic to turn across. For vehicles under 3500kg it is 110km.

I have travelled the N10 many times in the past but not since the covid epidemic and back then it was 80kph for anything over 3.5t including motorhomes. The police were pretty keen too often hiding on slip roads and bridges. There were sections where there was no overtaking if over 3.5 tons too.

We are doing that stretch tomorrow at 4t we will be doing 80 kph. No rush we have 74 days left

The 80kph speed limit and 'no overtaking' on the N10 were the reasons I drop from a 5.3T to a 3.5T van. 🤣🤣🤣

Hate the N10 far too many lorries on it & if you keep to the speed limit they drive right up your arse. Prefer to use the A20 (the free bit) a bit further but not so many lorries or retrictions.

We don't travel that section of the N10 anymore, but before we stopped we used to time it from Poitiers to the Spanish border on a Sunday morning, sans HGV and a keen eye for the cameras.

Need to check that out (A20)
Been using the N10 loads of times, would be nice to go a different route.
Where do you cross into Spain?
Coastal or across country?

First time doing the N10 and entering Spain via Santander. Found it long and slow with 50,000 roundabouts. (The French didn’t use to understand rounderbouts. It took them years to even find a name for them). Have always used the A75 and will do in the future.
But glad to have found the sun and a nice grassy place to rest my wheels. Near Chipiona.

Just arrived at site near Valencia after steady 5 day run from Le Shuttle, using the N10. Agree from Poitiers displayed limit is 80kph for >3500kg but all French motorhomes are 3500kg............
No stickers so unless the cameras are linked to the UK database the cops would have to stop and weigh everybody. We never saw a single cop car but, just in case, slowed down a bit when satnav warned me of an approaching "danger area"......
We actually used the Somport Tunnel again this time, saved us a bit of time and mileage.

I like the Aragnouet-Bielsa tunnel, I don't like the French side of the Somport.

That is our favoured route now, and over the last 2 x winters, we've not experienced adverse weather enough to cause delays. We came that way today, and apart from a smattering of snow on open grassed areas, rain, sleet, and fog in the high areas, it was a decent run down from Issoire to Beziers.

It may be 80 - 100Kms longer than the N10to Bordeaux, but it is so much more direct and with fewer roundabouts.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

I was in a 4t van and got flashed by a speed camera once on that road. No ticket in the post so not sure why, pre brexit too. I did wonder if the photos were viewed pre issuing of FPN and on seeing me they believed I was under the 3.5t.

I fear most people on here do not understand the French culture. Firstly all Camping Cars are Class 2, Secondly for Camping Cars there are no speed limits!! Thirdly it is impossible for a Camping Car to be over weight. 🤣🤣🤣

Now having got that out of the way why are people concerned about the N10 speed limits? Is there anyone on this forum had a speeding fine on the N10?

I remember back in the day before fixed speed cameras coming off the ferry at Dover joining the autoroute and setting the cruise control to 100mph and off we went. I also remember joining the autoroute at Dijon one year coming back from Florence and setting the cruise control at 120mph, obviously not in a Camping Car!!!

We all need to be more French.🤣🤣🤣

If you're only on 4 wheels and dont put the stickers on you're very unlikely to have a problem.
