Delays are expected when the M25 planned road closure goes ahead next week. (PA) (Justin Kase z12z)

When is the M25 being closed?

The affected stretch of the M25 will be closed from 9pm on Friday 15 March until 6am on Monday 18 March.
Drivers have been warned to expect long delays when the first planned daytime closure of a stretch of the M25 takes place later this month.
The five-mile stretch of carriageway will be closed from the end of next week. National Highways have estimated that over 200,000 vehicles will be affected by the closure, particularly those travelling in and out of London.
People driving to and from Heathrow and Gatwick Airports will also be forced to divert as the road between junctions 10 and 11 close. The route usually carried between 4,000 and 6,000 vehicles in each direction per hour from 10am until 9pm at weekends.

Jeez - motorways are closed all the time, what's the big deal

Apparently they have never closed the M25 for his length of time.

It's not just overnight closures, it's the whole weekend.

The section from the A3 towards Heathrow must be one of the busiest in the country.

Everyone living in the area (including my parents) is going to be housebound. It'll be like lockdown, but without the silence and Amazon deliveries

Having lived in that area for 25 years and looking at the proposed diversion routes, I can only see total chaos and Sheerwater will be at gridlock, it usually is in a normal rush hour.

Still the wildlife using the new nature corridor, which is what they are building will appreciate the inconveinience.

Will people notice that it's closed?
Definitely for anyone remotely local. You can immediately tell if there has just been a prang as the local roads bung up. A weekend closure will be complete gridlock as none of the diversion road junctions have any capacity.

They have never had a traffic jam on the M25...... they won't know how to slow down, never mind, God Forbid, actually stop... 🤪🤪🤪

I think a two and half day closure in both directions of one of the busiest sections of the UK’s busiest motorway might cause a few problems. I intend to keep well clear.

This is just the first of 5 between now and September.

Rumour has it that this is all part of building 10,000 houses by junction 10.

Then official reason is the J10 improvements and the extra lanes needed to merge the traffic from the A3. However if this also opens up developable land then perhaps the rumours will come true.
