I use my phone as a sat nav. On long journeys this flattens my phone battery as the phone isn’t charged at the same time by the connection point in the cab.

Is there a quick fix for this?

Why is the connection not charging the phone?
is it a low amp usb port
try plugging phone into a higher amp charge point or a cigarette socket with 2.4 or 3.2 amp usbs.

Is there any power (12v) at your 'connection point'? What type is your connection point? Cig lighter? USB?
Maybe its fuse has blown.

No idea. Why it doesn’t charge, it may be a low amp as I suppose it’s designed to connect to the speaker system.
But a bit annoying when you’re using the phone as a sat nav and you arrive with a dead phone!

When you plug in phone is there a message come up on media to say lower powered connection?

It’s a usb point in a storage compartment in the cab. It connects to the speakers ok. Just doesn’t seem to charge.

I can charge the phone via a cigarette lighter usb, but then can’t connect to the speakers as a sat nav.
So I take it it should charge then?

I'm not familiar with such a dual function socket so may be well off helpful, but if it connects to the speakers perhaps it's an Aux input socket and not a 12v supply.

(Ah, have just read your last post so it seems that it does charge your phone but when its in use for the phone you can't play the satnav audio through the socket to the speakers at the same time).

It's a usb audio input to playback music from a phone or memory stick. It "could" have 5v out, even if it does it won't be enough to charge a phone. Sounds like you need a 12v cig lighter or dedicated phone/media usb port.

Any clue as to make and model of 'van...?

Does it charge with the satnav turned off?
If so the phone is charging OK but its using more power than is avalible from the charge. Used to be common on older phones but doesn't normally happen on modern phones. So as others have said the USB port you are using is probably not powerful enough.

It’s a 2015 Autosleeper Broadway.

Is it a simple job to get it changed to a usable port/connection that’s more powerful?

Assuming Peugeot Boxer and the USB low down on centre console next to an AUX cable input, then as others have said and Lenny HB clarified, it's not powerful enough. My 2017 Boxer won't charge a phone that is in use from that port.

I have a twin 12v cig to USB plug with 1amp and 2amp USB, the 2amp works fine for me when using the phone as satnav and will also charge. I understand you want to hear the satnav through your speakers but I get on fine with the phone speakers.

It may be the model year but do you not have a USB next to the 12v DC cig lighter?

If you find a source of charge, you could use an AUX cable for audio in the 'van if your phone has a headphone output or maybe a Bluetooth dongle but we are getting complicated now.

Just a thought, but without checking I am sure the USB socket in our Panda is purely to input media I.E music etc or as you say use speakers..... it will not charge phone even if not using the phone for any thing else..
Could yours possibly be similar??

Often the usb in the glove box is only for data such as music connection. They often don't supply many Amps. If you have a cigarette socket 12V, put an adaptor in that.
My Toyota car can't charge my iPhone from lower usb port but will work on the higher usb (higher position on dashboard).

Thanks all,
I think you must right, the usb in glove box is just a connection point.
There is a cigarette lighter socket we can put a usb in that will charge.
So looks like we’ll have to juggle phones for sat nav and charging on long journeys.

I was reading on another thread about using a usb charger in the TV point. That could run off the leisure battery.
I’ll investigate that today. As then if we arrive with a dead phone we can recharge once set up.

As mentioned in post #14, you can get twin USB ciggy lighter 12v plugs, one for each phone. Use the higher amp for the satnav phone (y)

Think the issue is he cannot connect phone to media so he can use thru speakers AND charge at same time...even from a differant higher powered USB.... same cable... has to be one or the other👍

Indeed. In same post was suggestion of aux cable to audio input if the phone has headphone output, would that work...

Or if van has blue tooth.... could sat nav be connected with blue tooth and charged with cable??

No headphone output (iPhone)
Can’t remember if it has Bluetooth. Didn’t get over there today as gone down with Norovirus!

I navigate using my iPhone 12 mounted on the driver’s fixed window and power it from a rechargeable lithium battery bank that sits lower down in the door. I recharge the battery bank overnight ready for the next day.

Got over to the van today and found the TV point will indeed charge the phones via the plug in cigarette charger thing when not on EHU.
Excellent tip, whoever suggested that!

Thanks all 👍🏼

I charge the phone from a usb plugged into the cigarette socket and link the phone to the radio via Bluetooth. Works fine with Google maps sat nav. One drawback is that any music/radio etc has to be initiated from the phone which the sat nav instructions override as appropriate.
