Lovely day so decided to sort the towing eye(front o/s bumper) noticed last year it had a sheared presumably towing eye in it ,so I have just removed the remains and it is circa 16mm od and a left hand thread ,Am I right in assuming it should be Right hand thread and bigger od ?
2020boxer.
Any info much appreciated.

Possibly but going on the fact mine is sheared ..clearly not man enough, going to drill and tap 20mm.
Got plenty of 20mm eyes
Plenty of meat in the "nut"

Wonder why LH thread? Is it because a towing vehicle would have a RH thread tow eye at the rear?
Maybe talking rubbish but it could be to do with the rope.
Rope could be twisted to the right so as it stretches it will unwind to the left.
A right hand thread would unscrew and wind out the eye.

See, told you I was probably talking rubbish

That did cross my mind. Very sensible idea I would say.

Towing on a rope has been illegal for many years, tho plenty of places still sell them, and I've seen breakdown companies using them fairly recently (no names the biggest 2 names)

Drilled and knocked in suitable sized quality file tang, penetrating oil and rock it out .As said earlier I'm going to drill out and tap for 20mm tow eye ( ordered a tap off eBay £10 ISH( most of my taps/does are imperial)
You could do this if you can't persuade your broken bit out

That is exactly the reason for the LH thread; for stranded twist ropes. Modern woven ropes and tow straps have made the LH thread less of a need!

Hope the tap is suitable.
Most eyes I've seen are a blunt thread....IE: the points of the thread are blunt.
