Hi All. We have just started looking to buy a used Motorhome and when we have sat in the drivers seat to see how comfortable driving position would be we have gone through the gear changes and have noticed that the Peugeot Boxer based models have very heavy changes, is this just because the engine is not running or are they always this heavy ?

Mine doesn't feel heavy but always changed gear when the engine is running

I wouldn't have thought it an unreasonable request to ask the salesman for the ignition key and starting it, even though you don't intend driving anywhere at that exact moment and as long as the battery has some charge in it.

You should take it for a drive, my 2012 Boxer gearchange is quite smooth.

What year van is it? Our 2013 2.2 litre Boxer gearbox felt a little notchy but gear lever moved smoothly.

You don’t say what year you are looking at- On the pre 2006 Ducato, the X244 model, the gear linkage can seize partially as the drain from the scuttle under the windscreen can drop water onto it if it’s badly positioned. Takes seconds to position it out of the way and prevent this.

The Fiat Ducato / Peugeot Boxer / Citroen Relay of that period are basically the same vehicle - so it may just be you’ve found one with a linkage that is starting to seize
