I tried to move the van yesterday and it wouldn't start but either a fan or possibly the starter motor came to life and wouldn't stop when key removed. Had to disconnect battery to stop it.
Left battery on charge all night, went to reconnect and definitely sounds like the starter motor is trying to start - no key in ignition.

A couple of times in the past few months I've turned the key and nothing, removed key and tried again and it's fine.

I'm thinking that the ignition barrel is faulty or shorted somewhere. Going to disconnect ignition barrel tomorrow and reconnect battery to see if the fault is still there.

Any thoughts or suggestion welcomed. Thanks

It does seem like an ignition switch problem, however it's also worth checking the solenoid and it's connections too.

Ignition switch , solenoid and starter motor connection all need checking / cleaning / tightening and see if that sorts it. Also the 2.5 years had crap earth leads . As a test put a good jump lead on battery negative and clip other end to engine block and see if fault goes away. I added new lead from battery to engine and also gearbox to inner wing - lots of handy bolts under there to use

Sounds like it could be a fan running , you would probably know if it was the starter motor
