I received an email last night informing me that my dog's microchip registration had expired and I need to pay to have it re-registered. This is the first time ever I have had this does anyone else know about this, is it a scam? The email was from "Petchip Network"

Pet micro chips don't expire, so I recon someone is at it.

Cheers

It's definitely a con. I think someone is setting up a new 'international' pet chip registration database. Which is a thin veneer of a legit business. They've used an illegal copy of a competitor's database to spam unsuspecting pet owners and claim they need to register with them.

Ask them for the chips serial number and the pets sex and name .. you won't hear any more
I think they do actually have that info. They've got a lot of data. I've read that they have everything except the last digit of your phone number. Not sure if that's true.

The important thing is to know which microchip database your pet is registered on and that it is UK government compliant.

I wrote a post about pet microchip databases a while back:

They had my full phone number as well as everything else. I am going to check if the micro chip number was in fact the correct one. They wanted £18.95 to renew.

There is the problem for me. My dog came to live with me at 2 years old so I didn't get him microchipped, my mum did and she has passed away. Maybe my Vet has the details

Put his microchip number in Check-a-Chip:

Pippa is registered on PETtrac for life so I know if I get anything it will be a scam!

Wow, wonder how many £18.95's they got so far. It's not a huge amount for busy, distracted people, to pay without thinking!

Yes, I actually clicked on the pay now link and thought hang on a minute, I've had dogs all my life and never had to do this.

We registered with Petlog almost 13 years ago, have updated when we moved 10 years ago, but never been asked to re-register. You could check with the company you registered, but sounds like a scam as others have said.

Report it to the Police / Action Fraud.

They won't do anything about this case, but if enough are reported they might take action.

Maybe also the Information Commissioner?

OH spoke to the Vets on Saturday they checked his Microchip to reassure him (dog not husband!) and said it was registered for life and it was definitely a scam.
