I'm a newbie and always will be. You never know it all.
I know one or two of you are in possession of personalised no plates so what's the real cost involved?

The DVLA says on it's site that the cost from them includes all fees...but does it?

Do you need to retain the original no plate for the veh you are transferring it to and if so what's the cost if any?

Is there a cost to transfer or is it included in the price?

I expect to pay for the new plates, that goes without saying but these things are seldom straight forward.

Am i getting cynical in my old age or what.:whistle:
 
The only additional cost is that of the physical number plates...
All the rest is included in the DVLA fee. You might want to factor in your time and a possible visit to the nearest DLVA office for transfer of RFL details, but that's all - unless it's changed in the last three years

Bought our Vulcan ones several years ago and as far as I recall there were no hidden costs. All very straightforward I think.

If you buy from the DVLA or a dealer the price quoted usually includes transfer to a vehicle. If you buy privately or from somewhere like eBay then it won't.

Direct from the DVLA is usually a little cheaper. Their site is http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk The prices quoted there are fully inclusive of everything.

If you look at the various dealer sites be aware that the "ticket" price will generally need to have VAT and the £80 transfer fee added to it.

The transfer fee has to be paid in advance i.e when you buy the number. It is not permitted to just buy the number and pay the fee later when you put it on to a vehicle. You have 10 years from purchase to register it to a vehicle.

As you say you will obviously have to buy a physical set of plates as well but this isn't much.

Once your number is assigned to a vehicle it will then cost you £80 each time you want to transfer it to another vehicle.
 
It's only £35 to change your name to your registration number by Deed Poll, plus you have none of that 5 instead of S, 3 instead of E etc rubbish either. :)

There are very few, if any, regional offices left now.

You do it all by post to Swansea. All the forms you need can be downloaded from DVLA website
 
Not sure if they still ask you do you want to keep the original registration? I think they used to charge Well I never Said to keep the original I've taken the cherished number off twice and both times i received the original registration back.

You can keep the original if you want to, just pay the £80 retention fee for that number.

As you say though there's not much point as you will usually get the same number back when you take the cherished number off the vehicle. If you don't it doesn't really make a lot of difference.

Zero.:)

When you want to change the plate to retain it when selling the vehicle it's done online and you get the new number instantly.

Have found the DVLA site brilliant for transferring numbers, have 2 that I move when I change cars every year or so normally takes 4-5 days for the V5 to come through and as there is no tax disc now it's even easier.
Bit hit and miss with insurance as I found some charge to change a document and some do not.
 
I think the only time you will not get the original number back is if it was bought brand new and no other number has ever been issued, always keep the original plates to put back on when removing, save a few £'s and hassle getting them made

But agree with all others DVLA all inclusive apart from the plates, we must have moved plates over 50 times in total, possibly 100, real shame the DVLA offices all went, it was so much nicer to talk to someone and hand over papers rather than posting original docs o_O
 
Biggest PITA is when you decide to sell the van and keep the number, have to wait for dvla to do the change before you sell it? Stops impulse buying I guess:p
 
We were able to choose a reg plate for our MH not long ago. Gutted that some jammy sod nabbed the one ending in Oh Please!, and the missus said we couldn't have FAF or FEK. Ho hum.
 
Make sure the number you're buying is older than the vehicle it's going on.(y)
I wanted to transfer mine off the Chieftain onto the Concorde......Could'nt do it because the plate was a couple of months "newer than the Concorde.
I just had to go a buy another one !!!:LOL:.
 
I bought, good 16 FUN from the DVLA as the one that was going to be allocated was an awful local one to Huddersfield.
GeeDee. is My initials and the South Kent area (Dover) code as well. 16 is obvious and FUN, I have no idea why I should possibly want to get that but it was there. It cost me about £320 including the allocation fee of £80 which is payable anyway, It was the number allocated to it on first registration so will stay with it for life now.
I have four attempts now to put Gee Dee in as my initials, but the program overrules me everytime.
 
Having bought a few plates from DVLA I can confirm getting the plate is very straightforward.

As some of you may know I had a very expensive trip to the Peterborough show. But sat in the van on Friday night, found a suitable plate for the new MH and bought it on line. The retention certificate arrived Tuesday, the day after we got back from the show. That's an impressive service!

But I've also had a very unimpressive experience too which included being sent some very stroppy letters telling me my vehicle was uninsured.

On that occasion I was transferring my plate from one car to another. I got sent all the info I needed from DVLA and as they instructed, I got the new plates made up and fitted, and told my insurance company.

Just after this happened my father died and I took my eye off the ball and didn't notice that I hadn't been sent a new V5.

So I got letters from some official body telling me the vehicle bearing the "old" plate was not showing as insured on the MID database and as such I was facing a hefty fine and potential vehicle seizure. It wouldn't of course show up on the database as insured, as the database had been updated to show the new number.

Eventually I got fed up of writing back, and rang the DVLA who were very helpful, apologised and sent me a new V5.

Finally I got a letter from the official body to tell me that " they were no longer going to take proceedings" or words to that effect, a standard computerised letter, no apology or anything.

So the lesson is that if you do get the number changed, make sure you also get the V5 back as it'll save you a lot of unnecessary angst. The letters were definitely not friendly and I had enough on my plate without aggression from some faceless w*****r
 
My sons have told me should I ever get a personalised number plate they probably would never speak to me again.

When we bought our van, new, the number allocated by the DVLA was SN08FCC.

I dealt at Peterborough as well. The dealer wanted my plate off the van beforehand so at Tuesday 1700hr I applied online to change the plate for my present van. I had the authority through on the Thursday and the dealer sent the new plates which arrived the following day at the same time as the new v5 from DVLA. DVLA very efficient.
 
More than they are about my change of weight entry in the V5. put in to them four weeks ago. I did get the new number plate issued straight away but it was done online so the computor issued it.

See I never even thought about the insurance, will give them a ring tomorrow before I make up my mind.
If all eslse fails I may go down the "deed poll" route.

Any suggestions for YN--EHU.:LOL:

Got caught by the coppers about 10 years ago bought a new car for my wife and had the letters and numbers "tweeked" to spell her name, got pulled and fined.
Have had the smallest plate made for my car and it comes with a cert to say it is legal, have had a few police look but not been pulled yet.
 
When I had my number (A1 4 KOF) on my motorbike, I was stopped by a community police officer for having an obscene number plate. I had to present my insurance to the local Nick. And I hadn't notified my insurance company! Luckily they just confirmed it was the correct vehicle and all was OK.
