Benzene contamination found by a US lab using Perrier as a "pure" standard for their gas chromatography and found an unexpected peak. Don't think it ever fully recovered.

I read that some bottled waters contain more bad stuff than a lot of tap water

Many years ago I was involved in a water contamination issue with the potable water storage tank on an offshore facility. Whilst flushing some plant equipment diesel back flowed into the water tank. You can imagine the challenges to get the tank cleaned. For several months only bottled water was being used for drinking and cooking at considerable expense giving the shipping of bottled water. Bi weekly samples were sent for analysis and things were improving. The offshore medic was responsible for the sampling and shipping of the samples and I was involved in reviewing the results. A set of results arrived which were very alarming, although things were getting better and we were at drinking quality levels the most recent samples had shown a major deterioration in quality with more concerning results than we had seen in months with some unexplained toxins. I called the medic to explain and he cackled like mad, “I knew it!” He went on to explain the sample sent was from the bottled water they were drinking and not from the potable water tank. They resumed normal operations the following week.
