I think its because the government realise that the over 60's are the ones with the money, and they would prefer to see them spend it in the UK.

It's the WHO saying not to travel, not our Government

What if you are already in Spain, can this be used as an excuse to stay in there for more than the 90 days as we are told not to travel

Maybe the Gov. will bring in a £200 fine for any over 60s found more than a mile from home.

So if your 1.5 miles from home and without a mask that's £400 thank you.....Kerching !! Soon pay off the National Debt that way.

Money for old clog irons, time they got rid of the GP system and gave our useless GP's a kick up the arse.

All GP surgeries in our town (who collaborated on first and second jabs) decided not to offer booster jabs.

I'm guessing that the whiff of extra money could prompt a rapid u-turn.

To be fair WHO did initially say those over 60 should avoid international travel earlier in the week and then it was corrected to those vulnerable and unvaccinated over 60.

& before, when the early arrival of the Pakistanis, all neg tested before boarding , & complaining bitterly about having to take a uk test on landing, then having been out & about mingling were found to be infected with the then, new Delta variant.
Anything like that they should be tested & isolated for 2 weeks to ensure compliance.

Looking forward to overwintering in Spain. Fingers crossed Governments act on scientific advice and that turns out to be no worse than the Delta variant, or even better has little to no impact on severe disease and death. As far as I'm aware nothing significant being reported from South Africa other than mild symptoms. No doubt some will not be happy about that. The press love to make a crisis out of anything that gets their attention.

Getting the 3rd jab is a good idea. As long as you remember to get your loyalty card stamped ! As when you get the 8th booster you get a free toaster !

Early reports from Israel say Omicron is only about 1.3x more infectious than Delta. Also that Pfizer still provides 95% protection from hospitalisation. (Israel is pretty much 100% Pfizer so comparisons against other vaccines are not possible).

Nigeria is claiming credit for the first case of Omicron, from a blood sample provided in October. Maybe it wasn't the Botswana variant after all.

Other rumours reports will soon be available.

The actual statement says:-

“Persons who have not been fully vaccinated or do not have proof of previous SARS-CoV-2 infection and are at increased risk of developing severe disease and dying, including people 60 years of age or older or those with comorbidities that present increased risk of severe COVID-19 (e.g. heart disease, cancer and diabetes) should be advised to postpone travel to areas with community transmission.”

Its a warning, not a ban on travel! It seems to be particularly aimed at the vulnerable because of lack of vaccinations, previous Covid infection or existing health conditions (comorbidities) and anyone over 60 (feeling nervous or vulnerable).

Feel free to take or ignore their advice! In a few weeks the scientists will have evaluated the risks particularly associated with the Omicron variant and we will know much more.
