Some....good & bad!
Hi, just trying to narrow down a suitable purchase and noticed an ad for a Benimar Mileo 282. Says it is 4 berth with a max user payload of 280kgs for the 3500kg version. Correct me if I am wrong but that in itself would barely be enough for 4 passengers let alone anything else??
Please correct me if I am misunderstanding how this all works. Can a used van be uprated?
Thanks

In my opinion that payload is miniscule for 2 let alone 4. We have ordered a heavy chassis PVC as opposed to the 3500kg as we considered 400kg payload insufficient even if we upgraded we would still be limited.
I believe up plating can be done on second hand but would stand advised on that.

Used vehicles can be uprated. I think that’s a Fiat chassis. Usually 4000kg ish uprated weight however you also need to consider what the rear axle weight capacity is and if it can be also be uprated (perhaps by air bags etc).

That is a poor payload.

Up-plating is common but will depend on the tyres fitted, the chassis and other things. There are firms that advise and do it for you.

Search this forum for names but SV Tech is probably the best known.

Miggs you need to look at the weight plate of the vehicle which will give you what the vehicle can be uprated to without suspension or tyre upgrades.
Also many 3500g vans have a 2000kg limit on the rear axle and most are already at that. Therefore any potential upgrade in weight without mods will likely be over the front axle and not very useful.

Not if it was qownplated by a dealer or a previous owner to suit their 3500kg licence restrictions but can be above that technically.

I understand that SVTech, and maybe others, will tell you for free whether a vehicle can be uprated and what is required, but will obviously charge for actually doing it.

That doesn't sound right to me

I think the Benis can be uprated to 3650kg just by paper exercise but that wouldn't still be enough

According to Marquis the Max weight is 3650 for the 282 so someone must have had it downplated. Someone who travels very light

what i have written is correct down plated or not the weight plate will state the max loading per axle, and show if its been down plated. BUT! there is no point in us debating this as OP has decided to move on.

Also that 280kg will be before any factory/dealer/user options.
Add an awning, second battery, a passenger, fill the water tank and you will have about 20kg left for everything else.

You really need 500 absolute minimum for two, 700 - 1000 is better. We have 1350kg we have about 250kg spare.

Ask for a weighbridge ticket before you buy. We did and completely empty it weighed 3600kgs and after we had it updated to 5250kgs we’re happy with the payload 👍

What you wrote was "what the vehicle can be uprated to without suspension or tyre upgrades."

I think you meant operated at not 'uprated to'

Which is why I challenged that.

You are correct.
What I actually meant and did not say very well at all is that the weight plate will always state the absolute maximus per axle.
Example..

Axle 1 max 1850kgs
Axle 2 max 2000kgs

But the max gross weight may be registered at 3500kgs
As you know then the vehicle could be loaded to a max of 3500 provided no single axle load is exceeded.

The above example would Indictate that it is poss to up plate from 3500 to 3850 without modification.
However, that additional 350 kgs over the front may not be that useful.

Usually we all want more over axle 2 or the rear end which in most cases requires an upgrade.

But without the op looking at the numbers on that plate they will not know if an upgrade without mods is either possible or give a practical solution.
