I’m looking for a pay as you go sim that I can buy in the UK for next to nothing, put into my spare phone and register it but not have monthly payments to keep it alive. If I do need it I could top it up online and use, preferably with some roaming data.

The ones I’ve looked at either need you to run it and suspend but there’s a delay of up to a month to reactivate or boost data or others where there’s no roaming.

Any SIM cards out there which would meet what I want?

Thanks.

I used to pick up a free Tesco mobile one and put £10 on it, don’t know if they still do them.

Instead of that why not get one of the cheap Lebara Sims on offer and have a SIM that you can use instantly if you need it, I've got a 15gb phone SIM with unlimited calls & texts which I can use fully in the EU. The deal is for 6 months then the price goes up so I can just cancel it and get another discounted one if I still need one.

O2 classic SIM need to put £10 credit on but never expires as long as you make a call or text once every 6 months.
When you first register and put credit on they used to give you £5 free, not sure if they still do.

What do you think of the coverage with Three? I found it very poor in France.

I live in France and have used it here, as well as in Germany and Spain without an issue.

You could also look at IQ Go. Runs on EE. The sim is £20 to buy but then you top up online for £20, giving you 100gb roaming UNCAPPED. I've used this all over the place with no problems. I think you can also top up for lesser amounts with less data, too, but it's more cost effective to get the 100gb if you need a lot of data.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I’ll have a look.

I’m aware of the monthly renewable ones, Im looking for one where I can buy and register the sim for minimum cost and only top up if needed. Emergency only.

How long do you plan to go away with it? We got a cheap Lebara sim to use - something like 99p/month as an emergency sim for 2 months.... It ended up being better for signals in some areas than our EE sim and we used the same 5gb data allowance more often than expected.

Going for 10 weeks. My French Free Mobile sim has never let me down there so not expecting to use. It’s just going into our emergency phone in case one of us loses our phone.

So with the Lebara I take it you pop it into your phone and register here then you can top up online or by app if you need it?

Yes... Easy to do and good service? They do deals with discounted price for 3 months and then it increases but you can cancel at any time.

I’d second Lebara. Free roaming in EU and India (bizarrely). Really good coverage.
