Off we trott to Cornwall on Monday,, yeah… got a campsite 10/15 mins drive outside Falmouth, so if I fancy a bit of retail therapy or want to eat in a nice restaurant and want to park up locally, the answer to parking my 4.5 tonne motorhome anywhere in a carpark in the whole of Cornwall is a firm no… I just asked Cornwall council for a list of parking places ie..car parks etc.. that allow parking of a 4.5 tonne MH 2.98 high, 7.98 long. There is no parking permissible in Cornwall for such vehicles.. wow how to make friends and influence people and they complain that there’s no inward investment into Cornwall. Ahh well we’ll catch buses this trip and go to France next time..

You can sometime find space on castle drive, overlooking Falmouth docks.

A question for those who know. Is parking a problem for 3.5t 6.36m PVC type vehicles too?

Most car parks in the UK (not just in Cornwall) were designed years ago for the parking of cars when the demand from owners of larger vehicles was far lower. Although the number of motorhomes in the UK has increased the proportion of all vehicles is still small.
Even if it would still allow safe manoeuvring of such large vehicles, many car parks would cost significant amounts to alter to cope with a demand from a relatively tiny proportion of potential users, money which would have to come from reducing other local services. In the case of any new car parks, design will be influenced by demand meaning that they will always tend not to cater for the largest vehicles.

Provision varies between different areas of the country, both for LA and privately owned car parks. Some have details on their web sites but even where they don't there are usually contact details to enable drivers to ask.

A lot of car parks have a 1500kg limit so why don't the SUV's 4x4's & EV's never get a ticket?
I asked this question of a number of authorities many years ago when I ran my web site.

In some cases they took the view that the weight had been uprated by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 s136.

Others said that it was not possible for parking wardens to tell the weight of a car by looking but it was easy with a van, motorhome &c. I would expect that is even more difficult now that the weight of cars, even larger cars, has been reduced by the use of lighter materials (I was told by a friend a couple of weeks ago that he was having problems identifying a new car to tow his caravan as models which used to win tow car awards are now lighter than they were).

The thing with Cornwall is they need tourist but don't actually want them, there so just post whatever you was going to spend there and they will stop calling tourist Emmets. Then you can go to France ect and enjoy 😉 your holidays in peace ✌️.

Always worth checking out the local independents, there are quite a few in Cornwall, check here for details which differentiate non council sites.

some of the park and rides have longer spaces truro is good i parked 6.5mtr van no problem so you should be able to find a spot to overhang a bit more, was fairly cheap as well and short bus ride into truro

Parking in Cornwall in the Summer is a nightmare regardless of vehicle size! When in Lyme Regis a few years back I emailed the local Church and asked if I could use their carpark during the day, they said no problem and directed me to a page on their website where it had a donations link.

£20 for a weeks town centre parking was the best money we spent on that holiday! A quick Google map search of the area you want to go to might throw up such places like Churches, rugby clubs, schools, etc. who might gladly take your money!

Rugby Clubs can be a good option e.g. plenty of parking at St Ives RFC & campsite with club house facilities at St Just RFC

Meanwhile, in Ilfracombe (North Devon) they have allocated spots for motorhomes in the car park close to the harbour, so you can pop out for a days sea fishing, or pop into my friend Tara's fish restaurant "Take Thyme" for some seafood :giggle: or do anything else you fancy in Ilfracombe.

Councils in Devon are much more enlightened about such things compared to Cornwall.

Recently had to go into Falmouth, first time for over a year, parked in the Quarry Carpark ,£2.60 for an hour £4.40 for 2 hours. Hopper Bus every 15mins takes you into and through town.

Finished my business in record time and couldn't get out fast enough.
IF you want to see Pasty shops, Real Estate Agents, Tat shops, Cell phone shops , Homeless sleeping in closed shop doorways , Tea Shops, Charity Shops & grime ?

Falmouth has the third best natural Harbour in the world, the Inner Harbour, The Carrick Roads and the Falmouth Bay are, in scenic terms, world class, unfortunately the Town Centre is a hi hole.

I’ll have a look when I get there..thx..

Don’t bother, it was full when I went past the other day and it’s very slanted…
Sites are your best bet, but there are places to tuck yourself away if you look hard enough, a fair amount of pubs will let you stay overnight if your having a drink in there…🍻😎

We parked our 8mtr 5t tag on Castle Drive with no problems.
We actually stayed at Menehay Farm campsite in Falmouth which was nice with a cheap bus service into the centre from outside the gates.

There's a large field with day and overnight parking on the outskirts of Padstow in a farmer's field at Sarah's Lane, next to Tesco. Can't remember the actual name.

There's a farmer's field right in the centre of Tintagel - £5 for an overnight stop.

We re slumming it in France, currently on a seafront pitch at a campsite right next to a nice beach, moving on today nothing booked, no worries, no traffic jams so far, totally different experience.

A bit os advance planning like that is never a bad idea.

Others might (and do) say that car park space should not be taken up with oversize vehicles.
It isn't a case of being "enlightened" but of trying to respond to the known and exoected demand at the time the decision is made.

Being wed to a Falmouth lass we are currently in Falmouth, with the roadworks on the A30 at Chiverton Cross R-A-B and then Stithians show on Monday it'll be busy that's for sure.
You can park in the car park at St Mawes, Pendennis Castle Falmouth, most of the National Trust have parking for motorhomes ok we have the local knowledge but there are plenty of places to park a motorhome, though Falmouth has suffered greatly over the last few years, M&S has gone, Nat West bank closed, there is only Santander bank now in the High St. Of course you have the Fabulous Lea singing and entertaining in the High Street so it's not all bad.

Oh yes it is, one makes little or no attempt to accommodate while the other makes specific provision available based on pilot schemes operated in the recent past.
