Hi everyone we are thinking of going away for couple days Tan Hill Inn then maybe visit Kirkby Stephens and Appleby is their parking in Appleby and Kirby Stephens? This weekend thanks in advance for help.

Just be mindful that Appleby Horse fair is on soon. Not popular with a number of locals but quite a sight if you are interested.

Some of the corners to Tan Hill are quite tight. The Inn will also charge you to park.

Big gypsy horse show/event at Appleby atm. We were in the area just over a week ago and there were loads of them about waiting for the main event to open its gates. We even had them parked up outside the campsite we were on near Barnard Castle. The Tan Hill area was fine though..it’s beautiful around there. 👍

Steer completely clear while the gypsy stuff is going on. Lots of residents of Appleby move out and half of the town closes down The "travellers" will be on route to wherever they call home for weeks after the circus is over, making a big mess every where they go, including Kirkby and Tanhill.
After that, there is an expensive campsite in Kirkby and not much in Appleby. Tanhill will welcome you, but at a price..

Yup, give the area a big swerve, but if you are committed to the area, Kirkby Lonsdale is a nice little town, plenty of pubs/eateries and you can stay at the Rugby Club which is a nice short walk into town and will give you a view of the Howgill Fells, which Ruskin described as one of the best views in Europe.

The horse fair started yesterday and is on till next Wednesday. I went through Kirkby Stephen on Monday and it was full of caravans and every bit of grass verge had horses grazing.

Unless you want a lot of people from the mother country knocking on your door and asking if they can buy your van or tarmac you a hardstanding don’t go anywhere near there this weekend 🤪

If you want to go to Appleby another weekend, there's a nice little CL although not the cheapest just outside the village

Durham County Council in their wisdom have a temp stopover for the travellers over the valley . But there has been no one staying this year for some reason. In years past they have caused alot of bother with anti social behaviour and rubbish

Don't rember any tight corners coming from A66 ,7.5mtr( recommended route ).
Yes they do charge £10/N .. However that money goes to Yorkshire Air Ambulance.. I personally am perfectly happy with that arrangement...

I have to drive past Appleby on the A66 tomorrow and I am not looking forward to it.

We are about to begin homeward from Scotland. Would have come off M6 at A66 to get to Barnard Castle. Decided a day or two ago to go further south before leaving the motorway so as to avoid Appleby.

Good plan. I have seen 5 mile tail backs behind one horse drawn gypsy caravan plodding along the A66.

If you come off at Tebay, you will miss Appleby, through Kirkby Steven to Barney

If you want a really nice run home, but aren't in a rush,,,,

Come of M6 at jct 40, Penrith,

Go east along A66 towards Scotch Corner then turn off at next roundabout onto A686 towards Alston.
Climb over Hartside and down into Alston where you turn right up the cobbled hill on the A689. At the top of the hill fork right onto B6277 towards Middleton in Teesdale then follow same road to Barnard Castle.
We've done it in a 7.5m MH without problem. Not a road to be in a hurry on!!

Scarborough council did the same for the seamer horse fair.
Skips provided for rubbish and toilets .....£5 a day.
Everyone stayed, nobody paid.
Typical Scarborough council.....heads in cloud cuckoo land.

That’s our thought. We are travelling from west of Gretna, so quite a long day and then down to Lincolnshire the next day.
