Motorhoming since 2011 - now returning after a long break!
Probably a daft question, but do any motorhomers do house/pet sitting while on their travels, between campsites?
We are in rural Cornwall, not everyone’s cup of tea, but just wondered if it is a “done thing”?

About 15 years ago, my parents who lived near Wadebridge, with 2 dogs and a large garden (and a big drive with EHU) had a couple park up whilst they were on a 6 week cruise.

They looked after the dogs, mowed the lawn, picked the vegetables, and generally made themselves useful.
I think my Mum paid them a bit, and they got free run of the house and it's facilities for 6 weeks.

Does it have to be a motor homer?
Plenty of people would house/pet sit for a week or so in Cornwall.

We are members of trusted house sitters, and Janie is admin on a Spanish sitter site, we tend to do our regular sits these day's and they range from over 3 million property to an off grid place 10 minutes walk from the beach. 🙂
When we applied for pet / house sitting we always mentioned we have a small dog and 6 meter campervan, we think they prefer that making you much more reliable, than say someone flying or without transport that have got back to back bookings, one thing we never do or need to do having our own accommodation. 😁
Here is our link for a 25% discount on Trusted Housesitters, we get 2 free months if you use it. It's accepted on any plan they offer.

There's a section on this forum where you can either offer yourself as a sitter or ask for someone to sit for you at your property.

We've had a few people look after our home while we have been away. They've stayed in their motorhome in the drive and had free ehu, water and black waste aswell as use of washing machine. In exchange they have kept the garden tidy and the lawns cut.

We are in southern france, we have used "mind my house" several times, 2016 4 weeks in US, we had a retired new zealand couple, 2018, 5 weeks in Australia that time we had a retired Australian couple from perth, in fact we stayed in their house the last 2 days of our holiday, we are still friends with both couples, in fact the Australian couple did another sit for us for 3 weeks in 2022, when we went to spain in the camper, finaly last time was again an Australian couple who live in france, in 2024

It does depend on the time of year, we were looking for someone for several weeks in march, but no takers, some uk people would have been interested, but due to other sits, couldn't becouse of the 90/180 day rule.

We have been very lucky, but have always chosen older retired couples, we usualy do video calls before we make a final decision, there is also a feedback system on the site.

A lor of these people country hop for a few months, doing sits in various countries en route.

Motorhomers in New Zealand make excellent house-sitters. They advertise in the motorhome magazines and often get booked to 'sit' orchards, small farms, and campsites operated by the department of Conservation.
Money rarely changes hands, but EHU, water, laundry, etc are generally expected. Some are allowed to stay in the house rather than their motorhomes.
Motorhoming is very popular with retired farmers, so they often set-off in their motorhomes indefinitely and pick-up house and farm-sitting jobs throughout the year.

Back in 2010 we sat 10 cows 3 horses and 2 dogs for fun member Roger ( Wildman ) probably many wouldn't have been here then, but Janie being around horses in her younger day's took it in her stride. 😁

One of the reasons we do this free service, is because our first dog went into kennels and she had a bad experience and from then on we had house sitters, but in those day's it was friends, we appreciated not everyone wanted to look after 2 dogs a cat 😉 (our sort of friendly chinese geese ) and a duck that ruled the roost. 😁

And as Widge says people travel all over the world doing it, our neighbour asked about it about 3 years ago he works from home and his mate still carries on here in the apartment but he hasn't returned he has just carried on travelling . 😁

We have made some good friends through trusted house sitters, and we are always their first call, some book their holiday around us so it fits in, and appreciate that we can't be everywhere at once and if we can help we will. 🙂

In June 2021 someone was asking about taking her little dog back to the UK, unknown to us at the time but Janie had found this dog about 3 years previously lost in Javea
( not the first one we have reunited with their owner ) anyway she came and collected it, we then meet the lady again in a office she worked in while sorting my pension out, so she was chuffed to bits us taking her dog back, she loved her 3 week holiday travelling through france with our Izzy stopping off to meet Frankie yodeli.

We love what we do and the dogs are as excited to see us as the owners. 😁
