The site is Graffham, West Sussex. But I've seen similar issues on a couple of other sites such as Corfe for their grass pitches. I'll suspect a technicality on perceived size and bulk of vehicles.

I've just tried Graffham, Booking as a motorhome, 6 x 2.4 m, no awning, 4 nights from 19/08/20 I was offered a choice of grass or grass with electric

This could go on and on, so I asked the oracle of all things, the fairies at the bottom of my garden

They said: "who cares, it's a box on wheels with an engine"

So there you have it, a definitive answer🙂

I was trying next weekend as a last minute type thing. It was only a couple of weeks ago I was there as a motorhome, but also a grass pitch. I'm sure availability changes all the time, it's just the classification of the vehicle that seems to make a difference as to what you can and can't be deemed to access at any one time.

No doubt I'm going to arrive this time and find that I'm having to shoehorn the PVC into a pitch, when the previous visit I had more space than I knew what to do with.

It all comes back to when is it a Campervan, or when is it a Motorhome. But somehow for the amount of money I paid for the PVC I would like to consider it as more than a mere:
"who cares, it's a box on wheels with an engine"

Having had many campervans I would say that a campervan is a vehicle for camping ie. basic camping, just not in a tent. A motorhome has hot water, a shower, a toilet (fixed) and heating. I don't think it needs a fixed bed to be a motorhome. Others may not agree  ;)

How can you have a site open for 'camping' with tents & have no toilets ? How do they think that is going to work?
Toilet tents 👍

Seriously, they require any campers to be self contained with all necessary facilities.

Just this last week I have bought a toilet tent to put the spare portapotty in when we go out with the grandkids for a picnic in the forest. Apparently they are currently like unicorn poo as every other family is looking for them. All the public toilets are still closed, but the carparks open, which is ridiculous

Tent campers will have to go back to basics too

When I had my first camper, a Fiat Amigo, we had a toilet tent, there was no room inside for anything. We washed in the sink with cold water via a foot pump. That is why it is a campervan not a motorhome :giggle: :roflmto:

Don’t put campervan if you’re using comfort insurance, as they limit your comprehensive cover in Europe to 90 days throughout the length of your policy. :(

For me, our panel VAN conversion is a Campervan ...'cos its a van. Motorhome for me means coach built of any description.
Our Comfort policy has following clause for Europe cover. ..."A single trip limit of 120 days applies to this cover.." so either we're not a Van in their eyes or they've changed cover

Page 18, this was the reason we gave Comfort a swerve.

Every day is a learning day... mickyc 's policy is called a "Twilight Policy" and refers to Campervans throughout. It states EU cover as
  • not exceeding 90 days in any one trip and 90 days in total during the period of insurance.
... still think mine is a Campervan though 😁😉

My Comfort policy, which does state the make and model of the PVC is described as a Motorhome.

Oh this is so confusing

Campervan = tin tent.
That's one way to look down on peeps :(

Every coach build, A class we have owned ( 13 ) over the last 26 years including our PVC V Line we have referred to them all as “ the camper “

Comfort offer two slightly different policies, with slightly different cover. One used to be called Twilight and the other had a similarly unhelpful name, but I think they are now called Motorhome and Campervan.

If you insure a motorhome under the relevant link on their website, you are only offered the Motorhome policy.

If you follow the link to campervan insurance, the document links at the bottom of the page show both the Campervan and Motorhome policies. I'm not sure how they determine which one is offered or whether you can choose from either when obtaining a campervan quotation, but it may possibly depend on which vehicle icon you select when asked to choose the one that most resembles your vehicle.

When I first visited their website to get a quote, I realised by browsing both links that there were two differently named policies and read the downloadable links to discover the differences. Having found that the motorhome policy offered a better level of cover, I applied for a quote through the motorhome link and that's what I paid for.

I suspect the campervan policy is mainly aimed at those who may have home conversions as well as less well equipped 'manufactured' ones. It would be interesting to get quotes for the same vehicle under each catergory.

All of my live our travelling vehicles with beds with or without loos were referred to as campers. Nearly 58 years I'm not changing 6 birth twin lounge etc camper, 4 berth, u shaped lounge camper, converted holden van, home ,my pvc. Camper effectionately called van. Is a rose not a rose if called by a different name. (Not a true quote as I am sure someone will quote correctly) call it what you like, just have fun in it😊

My first insurance comfort told me I spoke a very nice human, that my Pvc for their policy was a MH

there are also an increasing number of VW California vans being sold (£60000+) new. These are seen as trendy amongst some groups of high income professionals. I would class these as campervans as they have no facilities!

So C&CC site didn’t bat an eyelid when I arrived in my PVC for a camper van pitch (if they did they didn’t complain apart from wanting my engine off as it blew hot air at them on a too hot day whilst they tried chatting through the window). But at 6m including tow bar cycle rack the pitch couldn’t have taken anything longer.

Seeking a quote yesterday with Comfort for a new PVC and when going through detailed terms with them on the phone the agent told me 'If it's built within the shape of a van we consider it a campervan', she then continued to tell me that the insurance for a campervan covers 90 day max in Europe in a policy year. When I said 'Okay, thanks then, we are done as that's not long enough for me.' she said that they were able to insure it as a motorhome as Murvi is a recognised converter. And this quote was about 25% cheaper than the 'campervan' quote!! The motorhome policy would cover 9 months in a policy year.

Sharp practice there I think! Also they were completely vague on what the situation will be for a green card for either Turkey or Morocco, but the figures that she 'thought', would amount to about half the full policy cost plus a £20 admin fee.

Spoke to Saga who were much more transparent, asked for no additional security (tracker / immobiliser etc). Granted they were a bit more expensive but that was with a fixed price for three years (none binding if you find a better deal at first or second renewal).

So when is a motorhome a campervan?? When it can be charged at 25% more than at motorhome with less favourable terms in my case!

I’m insured as a Motorhome with Comfort. Don’t recall any discussion of camper van policy yet it’s the shortest length 5.4 m PVC in the Range ( I think that there is. 5.0m Ducati but nobody uses it?). Wasn’t worried about such far flung places. As I have to work ignoring that virus thing max holiday is 2 weeks so that would only mean France Ireland or similar.

I’ve just joined C&MHC, sent them an email asking if I’m buying a Campervan or a Motorhome for Insurance purposes......told them I’m buying a Sunlight Cliff 600.

Waiting for a reply.

I spoke to comfort today and was offended by the person I spoke to as he told me because it was valued at under £100k it was a campervan. I really don’t think he had a clue and was following an algorithm. I course it only goes to say I won’t be using them!
