We are now on the Aire at Nevers with just under 600 Kms to do over 2 days. Shorts back in the drawer as the French are all in winter costs and trousers.

Spent last night in Issoire and went for dinner at about 18:20 and told to come back at 19:00. Went back at 18:50 to be told I should have reserved a table - full up! Miserable French Git! First time treated like this - anyway we got 2 fab take-away pizzas from a nice Italian!

Today we came to Amboise, a lovely city on the River Loire, an ancient seat of the Kings of France and where Leonardo Da Vinci was given a chateau by the King of France and is buried here. Mary Queen of Scots also lived here. So lots of fab chateaux in town and nearby - Amboise, Luce, Gaillard, Chambord and Chenanceau. Might interest Northernraider on his way down to Morocco! Near Tours. Pics to follow:-

There is a large island in the centre of the river with both an Aire and a municipal campsite and another Aire beside the river just out of town.

The campsite and one Aire are on the island in the middle of the huge River Loire. The municipal campsite was described as superior to the Aire so we tried there first. No tag axles allowed on the island which she described as”Fragile” with only grass pitches. She directed us to another Aire but a bit too far from town and the road had no pavement or cycle path so we went back to the Aire on the island and, naughty, spent the night there. Each pitch has 2 strips of compacted gravel for the van wheels to go on.

Thanks for lots of great information .
Friend was looking for an aire at Aigue Mortes a few days ago . Without success .
The one you've shown doesn't look great , any more information ?
It was huge, flat and soulless in amongst the fish farm ponds. It was OK for an overnight stop. Restaurant/bar/takeaway that we did not use. You could book bread/croissants for the next morning, the night before.

Enjoy a rest area in an environment conducive to relaxation with Access to Aigues-Mortes and Grau du Roi by privat...

We travelled up to Bayeux yesterday, not to see the tapestry but to visit the largest British military war cemetery in `Northern France. There is also a large museum with all the history of the Normandy invasion. The war graves cemetery is kept immaculately and there was a large team there cutting the grass, trimming the edges, the hedges and it all looked beautiful for a resting place for the fallen. It’s like a parade ground with everyone ramrod straight and in perfect alignment. Beautiful but a horrendous reminder of the horrors of war.

“…so we went back to the Aire on the island and, naughty, spent the night there.”
Was that the Camping-Car Park aire right next door? We were fortunate (June ‘23) to get a pitch on the municipal you referred to (which wasn’t much more expensive for two adults and electricity) but I guess with the weight restriction you were better off ‘choosing’ the aire. Amboise is a picturesque town and both aire/site are in a great location.

A few images if I may…

We spent the night at Port-en-Bassin-Huppain a lovely little fishing port on the Normandy coast which was invaded by British Commandos as part of the invasion. Nice site for about 30 vans at just over €10 per night plus a bit extra if you wanted water. Had a nice dinner last night and lunch today.

The trip back to Devon was a nightmare. We left the ship at about 10pm with the satnav saying we would get home at 00:30am. We got just past Bridport to find the A35 closed, backtracked to be put back on A35 further on then hit another road closure. Eventually tried green laning north only to be back to the A35! None of the closure signs said where it was closed from or to! Eventually returned to Bridport and set out for the A30 at Chard only to find more closures that way so diverted to Crewkerne and at last got on the A30 and got home at 1:45am - nightmare!

Welcome back to Blighty and sorry to read about your journey home. Clearly an ‘amphibious mode’ would have been helpful in this weather!😀 Thanks for your posts which we read with great interest as we took separate holidays near St Tropez and Aigues Mortes some years ago. Any recommendations for an aire near Chenonceau? We plan to go travelling on the continent in the moho once my better half retires in February and this is one of the ones on our list. P.S. why don’t we have cake counters like that in our supermarkets?😋
