The clear lacquer coating on the roof of my motorhome is coming off in places ( probably my fault scratching it when walking on the roof ) . I intend to gently rub it down with something like 1000 grit wet and dry and then paint it ( small roller and brush) with a silver coloured paint anyone any advice on this regarding paint and prep . The roof is aluminium I don't intend to go back to bear metal

Not sure which paint you should use but, I would suggest keeping colour as white, it’s white to help reflect sun/heat, IMHO

Be a good idea to try to find out what type of paint the original is or at least try a test area first.
Some paints are water based and can react by bubbling if the wrong paint is applied on top.
