Hi there is a CAMC site called Blackhorse Farm just off M20 near Folkestone approx 15 mins ish from Dover that have overnight pitches for ferry users. Hope this helps.

Maison Dieu car park is free overnight or you can stay on Marine Parade for about £10.

In France there is a camping car Park at Merlimont 30 mins south of Calaia which is quite cheap or north of Calais at Gravelines there is a free Aire just outside the town or a paid one in town. 20 mins to Calais.

I'd have gone Hull/Hook of Holland.
It would save you a load of driving, more than a few bob in tolls and you get a bed on the ferry!

Would you go that way if you were going to Western France? I wouldnt.

I prefer the tunnel but not a lot of use if the OP has already bought his tickets.

We went to Pisa in Italy 6 weeks ago via the tunnel then Luxemburg and Switzerland came back via France and found it more enjoyable and not has boring going out than it was coming back

What tolls would it save, I’m confused. The op is going to Italy. Which way would you go from Calais to Italy? Possibly Dartford Crossing x 2 on his way down from Kilmarnock & back!

We also use Black Horse Farm and we only live 40 miles from Dover.

I’d stay at Gravelines (approx 30mins from Calais ferry)(if that) on both outward and return and wouldn’t bother with the Dover stop. That’s if it fit with your ferry time.

For western France, I'd choose a channel crossing.
For eastern France I'd choose Hook of Holland.
However the OP is going from Scotland to Italy, so I'd not go through France at all

For Scotland to Italy I'd do Hull to Hook of Holland on the overnight ferry, down the (free) German autobahns to Switzerland and into Italy (or Austria, depending on where in Italy)

As well as the 2 x Dartford tolls the French autoroutes are mostly tolled.
The French route would be Calais via Dijon to Chamonix and through the (tolled) Mt Blanc tunnel.

But as above, the route in a motorhome between Scotland and Italy is via the Hull/Hook ferry and down the German autobahns with no need to go into France at all.

I was making this reply because its your standard answer to anyone going anywhere.

You can still use the Luxembourg route from Calais, Tunnel or Dunkirk, Thats what I normally do if I'm going that way. I definitely wouldnt go through Mont Blanc Tunnel - probably cost more than the ferry! and its not pleasant.

He's right but make it Bergues and you're slightly further up the road and 7 euros (14 for both nights) better off in the inheritance leaving kitty.

Edit. Spend it in 7 litres of wine

Wow, in all of my years of driving to Italy in the Motorhome that would probably be the last route I would take going from Calais.
Must admit, I did use that route in the lorry going to Italy on many occasions because of weight restrictions in Swiss, but definitely not in the Motorhome.

If it helps, the route from Calais to Belgium is toll free, Belgium like Luxembourg, is also toll free.

Oh, the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam for us in the summer months is around £1200 return. Dover to Calais/ Dunkirk is £205

Mont blanc was 69€ last week in a 9 meter tag axle the gotthard tunnel was a lot cheaper going down to Italy via Switzerland.
Gotthard tunnel is included in the Swiss vignette. OK you re going to get queues but its a whole load cheaper and easier than Mont Blanc.

I think it's often more boring coming back. The holiday feels over even though it may take a few days to get home. It's far more exciting to be going away, than coming back.
