On another thread I was asking about winter sites in Spain and have been struggling to secure sites in the 'usual' locations.
We love the scenery and weather around the Mar Menor area.

But we would also like to explore Portugal over the winter. (Mid Jan to mid March)

Have been looking at some of the suggestions on this part of the forum and see some places to visit. The main issue might be weather.
I am guessing that the Atlantic coast might be windier, wetter and a bit cooler than Spain with maybe a bit more settled weather in the Algarve???

As a preference we like coastal areas but ones that are a short motorbike ride up into some mountains. Spain has loads of those, but how about Portugal?

Must-do places to see? Suggestions for decent sites to base ourselves in?

Thanks in advance for any tips.

David, you need to be prepared for a wetter and slightly cooler ‘over wintering trip’ if you choose to go to Portugal. As I understand the Atlantic Jet Steam hits land on the Western Portugal coast; well it does when it’s running a bit further to the South of its usual trajectory… this equals a worse winter weather profile that SE Spain, which retains its top winter weather spot for mainland Europe!
