i would like to travel to lake garda italy with a friend, in our respective motorhomes, how can we stay in touch with each other in case we get lost, separated as i usually do at some point. i am not the most tech savvy, coming up to 78 so that dont help.

If you have fairly modern phones just put findmy phone in each others phone look on google for how to do it.

PMR 446mhz walkie talkies are a simple option for chatting away but very range limited..
At the end of the day, mobile phones if you get competly lost ... (y)

I would suggest that mobile phones would be what most people would use, other then that if you're not too far away from each other CB radio.

Walke talke CB or just phone or just keep yourself in line of site
But I am thinking RV points on maps a service stop a airs and you wate for each other stage them every 100km
Talk to each other and agree the place you will meat up if you get separated
Take the same maps up to date new use the same satnavs or phone navigation if thay have Tom Tom you have tom Tom And have them on same settings.
IE he sets it to avoid tolls for instance you do the same exactly
Sit down and agree the settings agree the stops agree night stopovers
Do I need to say talk talk talk before the trip starts
Both singing from same hymn sheet
WB

How about 2 tins and a long piece of string ....

Seriously though, just use your phone if you need to (legally!) as any form of walkie talkie is just extra expense and hassle of charging up etc - although you can get walkie talkie apps for phones they can have a high power consumption and to be honest I can't really see the advantage over a mobile phone call.

You both can download an app called "life360"
Its free to use and you can both set your phones up so it always sees/tracks you.
When you go onto the app you will see where you friend is in real time.

Yes its tracking you, but we have it set up with our daughter, so we see where she is, and vice versa with our phones.

am i happy to be tracked? Not always ( but thats when shes pee ed me off)
Do i switch it off, no
If it reassures her then what do i have to lose?
It can be set up with family members friends who have an interest in your travels, but it works both ways!
They see you!
You see them!

In my experience, you are much better picking a destination to meet up at a particular time. Even if it's somewhere en route 2 hours from now. That way you can travel relaxed, not wondering where your friend is, did they make the lights, did they take the right exit, where are they now? etc. This is stressful travel and doesn't make for safe driving. That's the simplest way which I use even when just visiting large events, exhibitions, museums etc.
In addition, in later years we've also used our mobile phones.

Use the "What 3 Words" W3W app.

thanks everybody, i was thinking i would have to buy sims for each country, so thankfully not the case

You will need to have EU roaming data on your phone.

Be aware, that not all providers allow free roaming in Switzerland.

In Google Maps you can share your location, it allows your contact to track your journey.

Hi.
This is JUST an Observation of what i " Did and DO "..... This is something i allways told/tell whoever was following me, to a new job destination ,work or holiday.
" If the lights start to change as i go over them, don't jump them, pull up. I will be watching in my mirrors and will pull over at the first chance until i see you coming again. "
It does seem to take the pressure off the following driver and everybody is happy. Have a super time. CB or walkie talkies sound about right.... Oh and.......10/4 Good buddy. 🚛
Tea Bag.

Mobile phones best. Just call normally as most phone contracts have unlimited calls and texts when roaming.

Really???? I think it's the opposite of that! 😱

I followed the Motorhome down to Spain in the car year befure last. We had agreed first stop straight after tunnel- I was out on earlier train so that was useful!
By the end of the month I was fed up with cost of roaming.
On the way back I’d turned off data and had no phone. He took wrong exit on roundabout. That presented me with quite a dilemma. We had no meet up arranged. I needed Wi-Fi turm my phone back on. Up the A66 I came across a small lorry which had deposited its load of Barb wire rolls all across the carriageway.
Great I thought not only have I lost him I’m going to get a puncture and no phone to call for aid!
I didn’t get a puncture and I met up with him evebtually
But I will never travel without a phone again. No matter what the cost!!
I now have 30 gb roaming from ID!!
Fix meet ups use phones!!!

You surprise me. Every phone contract I have had for years has unlimited calls and texts while roaming. Its only the data that is restricted.

I think we're talking at cross purposes, if you call/text the UK then as you say there's usually no cost but if you call/text an EU country from another, eg call France whilst in Spain, you will be charged as they are international calls/texts. Just don't want anyone to think that all calls/texts are free when in EU. As always you need to check the T&Cs to be sure of what's included and what isn't.
