Does anyone know what the recommended Fiat man hours are to change my 2011 x250 2.3 cam belt/water pump/etc? I´ve just been quoted 10 hours by my local Fiat Professional garage, seems an awful lot!

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the Spanish don´t do haggling, its always a case of take it or leave it! The parts alone were 645 euros, plus 10 hours at 75 euros making a total of 1395 euros :(

I think they are stretching it, ours went into a FP garage at around 08.30 in the morning and we collected it at about 16.30 and ours is an A class that is more restricted. The parts for the full Fiat kit were around £460 inc VAT, a couple of years ago.

Taking ours in on the 22nd Sept for MOT & Cambelt been quoted arround £660.00 for cambelt plus £25 for new Auxiliary Belt, then get the MOT whatever that is?, I think no more than £70.
Our dealer is a Fiat Professional Garage, trust them to do a good job, so fingers crossed.

Just checking my invoice for cam belt change on our 2016 X290 2.3 litre van conversion at the local Fiat dealer (Huttons), Weston-super-Mare last November. The water pump was not changed, because the vehicle is low mileage (15,872) and the dealership advised not necessary.

Labour 3.5 hours @ £80 per hour (£280). Parts £233.73 So total price £513.73 + 20% VAT = Grand Total £616.48 (inc tax)
----------------------------------------

daveinspain - 10 hours sounds really excessive, at nearly three times what I was invoiced for. I don't believe there is a significant difference between the X250 and the X290 mechanicals, in relation to the cam belt.

Did that include a service Mike?

No, there was an additional cost to the above for an oil and filter change and an MOT. Because of lockdown, I believe the van had done less than 500 miles since it was serviced previously. The total cost for the oil change - parts and labour - was an additional £180 + VAT, so £216 (inc tax). Then another £50 for the MOT.

(The labour element for the oil and filter change, was charged as 0.7 hours - £56.)

The problem here is finding someone else you can trust to do the job properly- that´s the only reason I went to the Fiat Professional garage in the first place.

I paid £227 for a minor service, due to low mileage, last September.

Mine is booked in at Hutton’s, on 2nd September, for it’s 2 year service. It’s going to be £400+.

I can not find an Independent with half decent reviews in my area. Fiat Professional is as to be.🤷‍♂️

Dave Newall (ex trade member on here) did our X250 a couple of years back (belt, pump and tensioners) in around 5/6 hours.

I´ve just found my old receipt from when Dave Newell changed everything 2016 - he charged for FOUR hours labour. Makes 10 hours look ridiculous! I´ll have to have another go at finding an independent to do it, but I need it done soon as we´re going away in the van early September. Thank you all for your replies (y)

Our van is just over six years old now, so guess I could think about using an independent garage, but I've used Huttons for about 12 years for doing our MHs, and I've generally been happy and feel they are pretty fair with their prices. Also, they should really know their way around the vehicle and have access to comprehensive technical support for any queries they might have.

I reckon they are probably a lot more competitively priced than the main Fiat dealer in Bristol, which would be our other option.

I got my cambelt changed by Huttons in June this year, and they insisted the water pump needed to be done as well although my Rapido Van is a year younger than yours and has only done 10,000 miles. With a low miles service, and MOT, including VAT the total came to £1,310.95. I'm not sure that is a fair price compared to what they charged you. I'm thinking of writing a letter of complaint to the owner.

Independent garages use a guide by reg number for hours , a 250 pump and belt. Kit quotes 4 hours max

That is strange that they insisted the water pump be changed, when they said not on my van? I specifically asked the question about it.

I believe that does increase the parts and labour cost significantly.

I guess, like everything at the moment, there will probably have been a significant increase in prices in the eight month difference between my van being done and yours.

My grand total bill, including cam belt, oil change and MOT was £815.34.

Although our van is only 2 years old, I asked them about the water pump for when the time comes. He checked on his computer for parts required for my van, and it came back not requiring a water pump…..let’s see in 3 years when it’s due. 🤷‍♂️ (y) .

Hi Dave, we had our cam belt water pump and service done just before Easter, seem to remember about €1000, 🤔 we used a German ( Gerald ) that has a big workshop in Bennisa, we dropped it off and he phoned when it was ready, after our experiences of using a couple of English and Spanish mechanics we would use Gerald again. 😁 Bob.
