Don't own one yet.
Hi
I was looking for some advice about 4x4 / off road capable motorhomes.
I am planning a round the world trip and will be going well off the beaten path. These types of motorhomes seem few and far between on the second-hand market.
Do any of the mainstream motorhomes pack enough of a rugged punch to take the rough and tumble of this type of trip.
Thanks.....
Tony

Try and find out what motorhome base vehicle will be the most common in the countries you will travel through. As it is a world trip I would go for something simple that can be fixed anywhere, consider taking your own diagnostic kit, the real thing not just a Halfords OBDII reader. As always 'what you don't have can't go wrong'. So no aircon, self levelers, lithium batteries etc.

Depends what you mean by off road. If you want serious off road ability you will need to get an expedition truck built. Next down I would say rugged 4x4 pickups with a demountable body although don't know how well demountable would hold up. What most folks would use as off road (bit more than a muddy field) then Sprinter 4x4 will do but get a good winch. Off road driving instruction would help

Hi Andy
That is a cracking piece of kit. Is there anything similar but where the bed is over the driver; I would like a lounge type area where the beds are in this.

I would look at a demountable which could be fitted on the back of a Japanese pick-up truck. I met a US couple with a custom made one mounted on a Ford F350 in France once who were going to drive it to South Africa, which they did.

This a great site, very informative.

Also enjoy reading https://treadtheglobe.com/, although do find them a bit irritating at times but can only admire their determination and not a 4x4 or rufty tufty van in sight, just shows what we could do if we had the determination.

See German brands Bimobil, Dopfer, Woelcke, Robel etc.. very rare and not cheap. Morelo, Concorde and Phoenix Alcove models are more accessible and available with 4x4. Then you have Frankia Plus, Dethleffs Alpa and EuroMobil all have models with the overcab twins and rear lounge but not really rugged enough, which is a shame.

The advantage with a proper off-roader vs a standard motorhome on a 4x4 chassis is that the "proper off-roader" will have a seperate habitation unit that is fixed to the chassis via a spring and damper so any chassis flex does not stress the body, I think a standard construction body rigidly mounted could easily be damaged by chassis flex.

4×4 iveco @ £250k+, man £350k+ :X3: , don't ask how I know.

2nd hand seems to hold their price very well!

I saw in a magazine (maybe MMM? One a few months old someone at work gave me) there was a 4x4 Sprinter that had a staircase inside up to a pop-top bed. That was 212k. Could buy mine and my neighbours house for that!

I don’t know of one. If you can go to some of the off-road, or overlanding shows there is always kit for sale as someone has had a change of heart, or a child so plans have gone to poo.

But remember that much of the odd stuff you see about, even unimogs suffer as bits are not easily available, and the new stuff is too technical. Better with something old school and fixable.
