Just travelled from Newhaven to Dieppe, as we drove onto the ferry there were 8 Machine gun armed soldiers on the car deck, and then walked around the ship all crossing to Dieppe.

Only two because of ticket price. They are known as sea marshalls, first introduced on cross channel ferries a few years ago as a deterrent against terrorists. I remember Brittany Ferries putting out publicity to advise passengers not to be alarmed if they happened to be on a crossing with marshalls on board. Having said that, I've only seen them once on the Plymouth to Roscoff route and there were just two of them I think.

On the contrary, I don't think I have ever felt in the dark about security precautions on planes, trains or ferries. The UK alert level is always available,, and updates are widely published. Clearly there are, and always have been, things that are kept secret from the public either for national security reasons, or to ensure subsequent fair trial. It shows how much the government, big business and security services keep the general population in the dark about what’s going on!
The mushroom expression comes to mind with these agency and the ‘serfs’; “keep them in the dark and feed them shit!”
