Not a good way to board a ferry

He must have been doing a fair lick to jump that gap.

Tragic.... I wonder what happened for the vehicle to speed up in that way?

Possibly slipper jammed around accelerator or in auto cruise or driver ill at wheel, could be anything. Trashed the motorhome in one go.

"Video taken from the back of the ferry (called the stern)."

The Daily Mail obviously thinks we're all morons!

Yes grateful to the Daily Mail giving is the technical term and to think that all these years I've been calling it the rounded end as opposed to the sharp end :)

Don't know if any of you scruffy lot know this, but , the wooden floor set into the steel, at the bottom of a ships hatch is called "a sealing".

One of the favourite "traps" for a first trip deck boy is to give him the job of "swabbing the sealing" in hatch # whatever.

They are left to their own devises, to do the job.

To see them lashing together several manhelps to a brush ("manhelps" are 6metre, bamboo poles, about 75mm in circumference) and then swabbing the "ceiling" always raises a few giggles.

In the article, it says there was a long steep hill down to the ferry. The brakes failed. The driver maneuvered to avoid hitting some things but couldn't stop it. Also no escape lane, I presume. Tragic.

I think a more likely explanation was he was racing for the ferry, looking on Google Street View the hill is steep but not that steep.

My mistake, there IS an escape lane, at least there is on Street View. That would have stopped him safely. I wonder why he missed it. Maybe another vehicle blocking it just as he approached it. I'm sure that's what they'll be investigating right now.

Tragic and one dead and passenger seriously injured , could have been even worse if people on the boat were injured too.

jeeezus, what a nightmare for all concerned in this awful tragedy, simply terrifying..
