Planning to do a month in Northern Spain/Portugal in early April/May what kind of weather could we expect at this time of year? Also number of traffic free easy cycling routes (wife has limited mobility and uses an Etrike)

I've been to the Picos de Europa a couple of times in early May and it was lovely....warm sunny days but often a frost at night.
Bear in mind that when it says 15c as far south (from the UK) as Northern Spain....in the sun it will feel like a nice summer day in the UK (I regularly sat outside reading for an hour at Christmas, it was warm enough for shorts and t shirt despite on paper being 8c....I'm 2/3 of the way down France)

The above link will give you access to the Spanish Traffic Free Cycle routes... I've selected the English version to aid your search..🚴🏿🇪🇦

Its one of our favourite regions but the weather seems to be a total lottery very susceptible to Atlantic weather fronts. I wouldn't even be confident that August weather would be better than April. We always have a fallback plan just in case

Usually divert somewhere else, if its only a few days then south side of the Picos is pretty much guaranteed to be good and then come back up or if its looking like weeks of bad weather then just go somewhere else, lots if nice places to choose from in Spain.

I can only comment on weather.

I went with my Mum about 15 years ago in April for 10 days and the weather was great.

A year later we went with just us and the kids for a week and it was awful.

Not sure that helps, but I just don’t think you can rely on good weather in that part of Spain at any time but you might get lucky.

Weather usually ok at that time. Although we have had rain and low temperature in late April during 2023. April last year was fine. Enjoy.

There is a nice site called Oyambre, with views of the Picos de Europa. Also has a bus stop outside to visit either direction. One can cycle to the local beach from the back entrance via a quiet road. Hope this helps.

We were there 2019 in April with changeable weather.
Sites we liked
El Molino De Cabuerniga in Sopena Cantabria
Camping Los Cantiles in Luarca Asturias
Bayona Playa in Sabaris Galicia

At that time of year, just like the English weather, but better, if the sun is out, then it is going to be warm.

May and June there will be rain in both spain and portugal. At least that was our experience in 2024.

Cycling is pretty good in spain on local / country roads with drivers giving cyclists a lot of room. Portugal is a bit more hit and miss particularly in urban areas.

Perhaps hit and miss is a poor choice of words 😃👍

Some lovely locations up there if the weather ls fine. We were there early may last year. Had 5 days of decent weather , then it was forecasting rain for a week. We headed to Zamora & Salamanca.
Will be there again at the end of April, but will have a plan b.

I can state with some authority, (cos I was there!) that the route between Pamplona and Santiago did not get any rain whatsoever in March 2019.

I should have put a bet on at the bookies on that one though.

They would have given me REALLY good odds on that (not) happening.

What do they say, the Sun shines on the righteous.

Maybe the term hit and miss isn't such a good choice when talking about cyclists?😅 (Tongue in cheek, not being serious. 😜)

We were there in January last year - it was 22c in Zarautz / San Sebastian, 24c in Bilbao (@ 16:30!) and warm all the way to Santiago.
No snow in Riano (in the Picos) for the first time in many years. We are going back to that area of Spain next week and hoping for more of the same! (y)
