Northern Lights or Bust!

I found the bottom part of sweden was where the stopovers were fuller. Why not ask the neighbours if they,ve been that way recently and got into Norway. Either way enjoy Sweden and if you want to see the lights the nights are getting darker, you just need clear skies.Mostly cloudy over there at the moment.

We are in Norway at the moment and loving it. I don't know if you have it sorted, but you can get good discounts (50%) on ferries and even better discounts on road tolls if you regester with Autopass. If your van is over 3.5t, you can regester as M1 category which means you pay the car price on the road tolls, again less than half the price of the truck toll. There are plenty of ferries and toll roads!! We did all of it online, the only thing we had a bit of difficulty with was getting our ferry discount card. In the end we booked into a campsite for a night (first in a month, Norway is fantastic for wildcamping) and had it sent there. Probably could have had it sent to the UK as nobody looks at it anymore. They just take a photo of the regestration and send you the bill, no payment on the ferries.

Took a second bike ride in as the weather cheered up, found 4 pachyderms with swastikas on them - part of the Carlsberg Brewery and built in 1901 apparently...

Skipped Stockholm as the place I wanted to stay in the city for a couple of days explore was full - mid September, I was surprised.

Now at Gavle, very pretty town/city with a nice spot by the river. Taken a bike ride and a few photos and a place to come back to another time I would have said.

Swedish main roads are amazing - make French roads look like bridle ways and English roads like donkey tracks. Little traffic, no roadworks, smooth and steady all the way, very relaxing driving.

Two more long driving days ahead to get to the North of Sweden where hopefully )see post above) they will let me into Norway.

Gavle , did you visit joe hill memorial ?

Read my mind, if I get trapped n Sweden then I will make sure I take in more of it including Stockholm. My focus right now is to get as far North as possible and see if I can get into Norway - after that, who knows :)
Stockholm if site full under the bridge , you can street ( quiet ) park near the old town hall in centre , easy walk along front admire the boats .

Just stopped for elevenses heading North, set off in glorious sunshine but has turned to rain and very gusty wind - tight hold on the steering wheel :giggle:

My track and location from the InReach for where I am now...

Couple of practical notes...

My phone is on Three in the UK - 4G coverage has been 100% so far the entire trip.

I have a 100Gb Vodafone card in a Huawei unit - coverage has been pretty good but several times I have had to log onto the kit to select a better network than the one it has auto selected. As I site here where you see in the previous post I am getting 20Mbps from the Vodafone card. Cannot complain.

Navigation wise, I am using a combination of CoPilot truck on an iPad (to the right of the steering wheel) and Google Maos on Apple CarPlay on the centre console. Proving to eb a good combination and also lets me have the iPad on a 2D larger map view when I want to so I can actually see where I am as opposed to what turn is happening next. Photo attached.

Heading for Barsta today, Lulea tomorrow and then hopefully into Norway the next day - it's a blooming long way!

Joe hill famous worker / union man who left Sweden for America , where he fought for workers rights

6 years living in Aberdeen and I never saw them. My son and I flew to Iceland for a long weekend last year, we landed in the rain and took off again 3 days later still in the rain, it never stopped raining the whole time we were there so didn't see the lights then either. I do hope you have better weather than us. Enjoy your trip!

Old tart At the top of the page you will see a black button with white text which says 'watch' - that will notify you when anything changes

Now at Barsta Camping for the night (around 540km North of Stockholm) - off the beaten track and a guy on a bicycle to collect the fee of 250Skr (about £22) - took it in euros as I have no Krone - in fact that is the first time I have parted with any paper money the entire trip.

Wild and windy and definitely a lot colder tonight - heating on for the first time but with electric and not gas as am conserving the gas in case I really need it later. Two baked potatoes with cheese and beans washed down with a beer and I think I will be settled in for an early night as very limited reception here on the phone or the Huawei - just enough for email and browsing.

Seen not a single English van since entering Sweden and still no masks. As I have been travelling North I have seen many many motorhomes all heading South!

A few snaps - as you can see it is right on the bay with a great view in a tiny hamlet.

Nope, happy with the garden and the dog, not her kind of trip - this is a number of long drives where she would have been so bored she would have blown her brains out!

If we had been doing tis together it would have been 3 months minimum to cover this distance.

Would have been for me/us too and then we would have had time to go N and S through Norway.

Next time - let us know in advance - so the beginners who have never ventured into Europe can follow (stalk) you. Oh - we actually managed the North Coast 500. We began on the day Scotland reopened its pubs- startling, awe inspiring - then the ferry to Harris and Lewis discovered we had the world to ourselves. Rock pooling at midnight. Watching the weather roll in.
