Northern France campsite

Le Crotoy for us. Depends on what services you want. This is a basic aires, but in a brilliant position. Walking distance into town and some of the best fish restaurants and bars.
Not stayed at the Aire but le Crotoy is beautiful - steam train around the bay of the Somme, great food and a lovely South facing beach. The sea food is to die for 😍

Ypres isn't far and there is a campsite within easy walking of the centre of town and the Menin gate ceremony every night, if you are interested in such things (y)

There's a nice aire at Zillebeke with a small lake next door. Walking distance into Ypres.
Yeah I realise that but thought he was asking for sites.
Could recommend loads of Aires which we use, but as it his first trip I thought he wanted something more formal.

my advice would be to try at least one aire while they are in france as it opens up so many options for future trips

As above

Ypres even thought its in Belgium would be perfect for a first stop over.
Fabulous square full of bars and restaurants, next to the Mennen Gate, and only a short walk from the campsite
Don't underestimate Belgium you could easily spend two weeks there or pop over the border into Germany.
There also a massive Saturday market in Arras that's worth seeing.

I agree with others that Le Crotoy is a nice place to go.

If you are not bothered by bells and whistles campsites worth looking at campingcarpark.com . We stayed there for Le Crotoy. Cheap, with electric/wifi/water/waste but no showers/toilets. You can search the area 2 hours from Calais using their map...

I know you knew this was coming
But on a first visit to France and Aires give gravelines a try, you won't regret it (y) (y) (y) :giggle:
I was going to mention it as it's about half way to Ypres :Eeek:
I thought you was keeping it a secret so as to keep out the riffraff :drinks: ::bigsmile: :drinks:

An hour up the road is Brugge, beautiful town, loads to see.
Great campsite at Memling.

There is also Montreuil sur mer. Lovely town great walks lots of bars and bistros. Campsite on edge of town, short walk, or Aires in town.
I second this suggestion . Lovely little walled town - basic aire facilities but felt safe

We stayed at that hotel for my 60th, the food is wonderful!
I stayed there about 10 years ago and agree about the food.

That stay was memorable though more for the fact that my wife forgot to pack me any jumpers for our weekend stay and i was freezing:rolleyes:

Camping Sainte Claire at Neufchatel-en-Bray is a good choice. A couple of hours easy drive south from Calais.

Handy for the autoroute (A28), Aldi, Lidl and and E.Leclerc supermarket, minutes away including cheap fuel.

Nice town too, with plenty to see and do locally. There is a choice of a full campsite or a commercial aire next door in the same ownership.

We use the campsite quite regularly as a stopover, but I know some Funsters enjoying staying there longer. Good facilities on the campsite, including bar and restaurant and all well kept.

Was always an ACSI discount site, note sure if it still is? But the price is pretty reasonable in any case.

Plus 1.Started as a stopover and now a fav. There is a great cycle route outside the campsite and a great pizza restaurant in town

This may be hard to find in France and a little more expensive than Spain!

unless ,you buy in the supermarket!
You are joking, aren't you? France is fabulous for its small cafes and bistros still, and yes, it might be a bit more expensive than Spain but it is generally a better value and better quality than our side of the channel.

We're booked on this route in March 🤞
Some gorgeous places around Dieppe, also Dieppe itself is fab, some great restaurants and the town centre is nice to explore. We always stay in the aire by the port arriving and leaving from Dieppe. Quite pricey at 13 euros but very convenient. But drive 15 minutes out of town and you are in the lush rolling countryside.

Camping du Phare just outside Honfleur is a municipal site with ehu and basic but clean facilities (toilets/showers/washing up area). This site is perfectly located for exploring Honfleur. I expect many of you will know how lovely this harbour town is but for those who don’t I’ll mention that my brother came back off a Baltic cruise and thought Honfleur was the highlight (and yes I fully appreciate Honfleur is NOT in the Baltic but I think Le Havre was a late substitution for possibly Bruges bearing in mind COVID-19 etc). Honfleur is less than 500m away.

Hi
We are hoping to travel to France for the first time, and only want to travel maybe about 2 hours from the tunnel or Calais, still unsure , would like places to walk to because the the wife likes a tipple and snack,🤔 any advice a would be grateful for
Cheers
Jeff
Strongly recommend municipal “ Aire “ at ST. VALERY SUR SOMME straight down the E402/ A16 south from CALAIS : exit Junction 24 on D32 / D940 via LE CROTOY . Worth a bit of Peage . About one hour easy driving .

Large immaculate site . Front section with ELECTRIC HOOKUPS ! Interesting walk 800 yards into medieval town centre on estuary plus extensive walks overlooking bay . €12 per 24 hours . Water . WC dump . Entry / exit via credit card . Municipal police call from time to time . Can’t fault it !

Thanks . Have been a member , on and off , of France Passion for quite a few years .

Chateau du Grandspette near St Omer is a lovely site, great bar and restaurant. Only stayed for a couple of nights at a time on the way home, but would always aim for there now as close to Calais
I came on to put that site, it's lovely.

Try also HONFLEUR municipal “ Aire “ - right on harbour in town centre + electric hookups on section adjoining entrance . Pay by card . Reasonable .

Hi, Rouen is an absolute gem, and if you fancy free camping there is an Aire within staggering distance of the centre.
It is adjacent to the swimming pool on the Island in the river
N49.4300 E 1.1061 we have stayed there several times...no hook up, no black waste dump, no water, no nothing ...no charge.

Thanks , Tim P . Always go through Rouen on way south . Good to know . Have a look at a spacious green picnic area at BEAULIEU SUR SEINE less than 10 kms west of ROUEN right on the river Seine ( past LA BOUILLE where the ferry runs ) . Free . Unofficial , but overnighted several times no problem . Watch the international tugs coming through from LE HAVRE . Very peaceful . You can carry on to DUCLAIR 5kms away to cross the Seine and go north to pick up the main artery routes .

The only thing the Aire on the front at Le Crotoy has going for it is location IMHO, it's basically a car park and a very busy one at times, I prefer the site's up the road at St Firmin

Chateau du Gandspette. Large campsite, lots of facilities. Handy for a stopover.

As you say , very busy , rutted surface ( if raining ) . Carry on across the bay to SAINT VALERY SUR SOMME municipal Aire : very civilised . Double the price of LE CROTOY but worth it !

Hi and a big Thanks for the tips, we have picked 2 sites, one in Northern Belgium and other in France
What is the difference between Calais and Dunkirk, on the Ferry other than location
Cheers
Jeff 👍
