We are planning to do a tour of the Normandy beach area (again, last trip was very controlled by operator) and would like to make up our own WW2 itinerary. Of course Pegasus bridge and American cemetry need to be in there, however based upon your experiences, which of the museums would you put in the list?

Regards,
BOOMEL

There is a good museum at Arromanches with a lot of information about the landings. It was the location of Gold beach and mulberry harbour and there is a free aire in the town in easy walking distance of the beach and the museum.
the american cemetary at Omaha is a must see - it's very haunting and again a very good visitor centre. Plenty of campsites and aires in the area.

This is not a museum but is well worth a visit if you are in the area. Plenty of parking.

All very American, but definitely worth a visit.

Arromanche, aire overlooking Mulberry Harbour, 360 degree is okay but not really worth the cash, but you do have the aire.
Sainte-Mer-Eglise, aire short distance away, not a museum as such but the mannequin on the church roof has to be seen, lots of memorabilia shops.
Longues-Sur-Mer battery, not a museum as such but definitely worth a visit.
Merville battery Museum, small but interesting.
Overlord Museum, aire.
Omaha beach museum and beach sculpture.
The Blockhaus, Eperleques, aire. West of Gravelines, Museum/Memorial, V2 assembly building, the cattle truck used for the transportation of slave workers we found was quite emotional.
Definitely LOTS more to see, we only had three weeks. :rofl: :rofl:

Oradour sur Glane near Limoges. Yes of course I realise it's nowhere near Normandy. neither is Arras, but in my opinion a visit should be a compulsory part of all UK teenagers' education on the subject of the history surrounding WW2 - though I didn't know about it until my late 50s.

As well as the museums there are hundreds of places to go that are off the beaten track as it were. I have led several battlefield and museum tours for a motorcycle club and used the Holt's book and the associated map to navigate off the main routes.

Yes, we have included places like Pegasus Bridge, Arromanches and the Canadian museum/monument at Juno Beach... as well as the "new" British Normandy Monument.

I agree with the sentiment, but it's got to be two or more days drive south, and has nothing to do with D-Day. Once visited, never forgotten.

We have just returned from France, we were in Normandy at the beginning of June, so saw some of the events relating to the anniversary. We visited -
Pegasus Bridge Museum and Merville Battery, close enough to visit both same day;
Battle of Normandy Museum in Bayeaux and the British cemetery across the road;
Airborne Museum in St Mere Eglise.

On a previous visit we went to the Overlord Museum at Colleville sur Mer.

All were very interesting and worth visiting.
