I have bought a replacement water pump as I think the non return valve in my current one has failed.

I want to just replace the valve and keep the pump as a spare. So....

1. Is this the non return valve? and...

2. It seems tight and I'm a heavy handed sod so how does it come off without causing damage?

You could have just bought a simple inline non return valve and still could keeping your new pump as a spare.
I'll be keeping the new one as a spare as I think the old one is fine for now. But is that the valve that I have pointed to and how is it fitted?

I don't know that particular pump but I would say yes that's the NRV,looks to be screwed to the top plate on the pump should unscrew BUT as the plastic will have age hardened and the threaded spigot on the pump body is quite a small diameter (& of course hollow) very likely it will shear off...it may have been assembled with a sealing solution/adhesive just to add to the fun.

Why why mess it the new pump trying to remove the nrv.
Either buy a new standalone nrv as suggested or remove old pump and then see if you can save it as a spare.

That's why I was asking how the NRV comes off. oldiesontour explained that it is probably sealed so I swapped the whole unit over.

Now you've got it off..hold the bottom part of the NRV and unscrew the top nut carefully, inside will probably be a fine spring and a ball or similar and possibly some scale/debris if ball and spring are good then a clean and possibly slightly stretch the spring may well get it working again

Apologies, it's all fitted and done now. I'll keep the old pump as a spare as it worked ok. I bled the water through to the taps and boiler and all working perfect now. Had a nice hot shower and now away out.

NRVs are about a fiver....I fitted one in line on my Hymer next to the pump...however the water that passed through my pump from the tank or the lime build up in the lines might have caused another failure...I need to go and buy another one plus a spare..
