We are looking for advice about using our jump starter.

We have a NOCO GB50 Boost XL 1500A UltraSafe Lithium Jump Starter that we bought for our previous van.

However, we now have a Globecar Roadscout Elegance PVC. For a Fiat Ducato, the recommended procedure is to connect the positive lead of the jump starter to the positive terminal housed on the right side of the engine compartment, and to connect the negative lead of the jump starter to the earth point some distance away (a post in the middle of the engine compartment).

The procedure is fine if you’re getting a jump start from another vehicle using jump leads. However, the short moulded cable that comes with the NOCO is not long enough to reach the positive terminal and to the earth. It’s short by about 7 or 8 cm.

I understand that suitable earth points should be bare, unpainted metal.

Can anybody suggest a specific place in a Fiat Ducato engine compartment that would make a good earth point and is close enough to the positive terminal for our NOCO to reach, at most 50cm?

Thanks.

Why not lift the panel in the passenger footwell and attach to the starter battery itself?
During my recent battery woes, my jump start gizmo reached the approved connection points but struggled to start my Citroen
But following a Funster suggestion, I connected direct to the battery terminal & vroom vroom

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We think we've found something in the engine block.

You can’t beat a connection direct to the battery terminals! There will be power loss using the engine connection points. That doesn’t matter when jump starting from another vehicle with its engine running but may make your NOCO struggle.

If the battery is flat and won’t start with the starter disconnect it and connect the jump starter to the leads then reconnect after starting

We've not had to use our NOCO on our van but we did use it on a flat car battery and it worked beautifully. The car started straight away.

According to the NOCO website, the BOOST XL GB50: "It's rated at 1,500 Amps, and suitable for use on gasoline engines up to 7 liters and up to 4.5 liter diesel engines, such as a car, van, boat, SUV, truck and more." I guess we'll find out if we ever need to use it; with luck, it will sit in the van, unused. :giggle:
