Here's an interesting one;

As some of you will know, Ayrshire now have a designated overnight motorhome parking scheme at Ayr, Girvan etc for £10 per night.

However, the car park signs are a bit ambiguous - you will see from this photo of the one at Ayr it clearly states 'Category M vehicles only'.

So technically this bars anyone with a panel van conversion as they are almost all classed as Category N. I wonder if anyone has been fined for this.

I wonder if Cat N vehicles are classed under the normal 'car' rules for the site then. Perhaps even free overnight unless you're Cat M?

Doubt it :D - however it's one way to interpret the sign. Were there other signs for non-MH vehicles?

I'm guessing that if you've paid your money they're not going to care too much if you're and N or an M, but it could do with some disambiguation.
 
Well, I just looked it up and their definition of who is allowed is:

"Motor vehicle which is constructed or adapted for the carriage of passengers and their effects and which contains, as permanently installed equipment, the facilities which are reasonably necessary for enabling the vehicle to provide mobile living accommodation for its users".

On that basis, I'd be happy to argue that my PVC falls within the description if challenged.
 
Our pvc is an M1 🤔
I'm not ssure if my memory is playing tricks, but I remember reading some time ago that DVLA seemed a bit arbitory about the M and N categories.

I have always thought that vans which were first registered when they had no MH-style interior were the ones that were Category MN but after conversion were either 'Vans with windows' or, if DVLA could be persuaded, could be re-categorised as Motor Caravans, then they became Category M.

If they were delivered unregistered to MH builders and were not registered until fully converted, then when completed were registered as Category M and body type Motor Caravans.

Is this understanding correct?

I think that is correct, vehicle first registered as a goods carrying vehicle- N
First registered after conversion to a motor caravan - M.

If you have a N van and convert to a Motor caravan it stays an N

Some should complain (seek clarification) to the Council because, I think, the sign contradicts the website.

The sign says Class M only whereas the website says motorhome type vehicles.
Usually, signage is secondary to policy and legislation because the sign is only a visual representation of the legislation/policy.
Same with speed limits etc. Such signage only can be enforced if there's legislation or Council policy/by-law to substantiate it.

Yes , my Factory Conversion Globecar PVC is Category M on the CoC and says Motor Caravan on the V5C (no mention of Category M on the V5C)

No
Tax class never changes if you convert after its been on the road. Both I've "won" at DVLA stayed N1 category
(both bought new as van, then converted by me, then changed to MC via DVLA, one easy, one battle/war. they lost).

My converted panel van was registered as an M1 Motor Caravan, which is the same as coach built and A class motorhomes. It seems to me that the sign covers all types except a few that were originally registered as N light goods vehicles and were subsequently converted to motorhomes. It is the DVLA’s job to classify and reclassify vehicles, other authorities can only assume that the registered category has been correctly applied.

Edit. If you want to ask the Council what the sign applies to I suggest you do not use the term PVC which they will probably think stands for PolyVinylChloride (a plastic).

Yawn ........ Last night was parked next to a Spanish registered van with a Hartal Bang Bang door.

Bang Bang all flippin' night. Drove me mad. They should be banned, or taxed, or have soft close mechanisms, or something ..........

More of the professional converters are now selling their completed conversions as Panel Van, N1.

We know from the posts on this thread that big converters such as Adria, Malibu and Elddis register their converted vans as M1 motor caravans. Who are these converters that are selling their conversions as N1 light goods vehicles rather than as motor caravans and why?

That is another subject and due to DVLA changing the rules for category changes by convertors.

I'm sure I've read on here that Consort are selling as N1, Panel Van.
