Today's stupid question...

Filled up with water, ran tap for a bit to fill up boiler

Switched on boiler to use gas and electric

Tried various combinations of gas only or electric only or both

Or hot water only or heating only or both

I can only get the heating to work

Hot tap splutters, you can hear the pump working but no water comes out

Anyone help me learn my second lesson of the day?

First one was that if you drive a twin axle motorhome into a grass pitch to reverse onto a hardstanding pitch, and its march, you get stuck in the mud and have to get rescued by a nice couple next door who brought mud mats.

I'm on a club site so I'm on the naughty step now.

Sounds like you have an airlock. Turn the hot water off asap to avoid ruining the boiler. Then try and get water to flow out of the taps, both hot and cold. You may have to suck on the shower hose!

Sounds like an air lock not a heating fault. In my experience spluttering of hot and cold taps after refilling an empty tank is normal. I clear mine by turning on one sink tap at a time and covering the spluttering outlet with a finger several times, releasing it when some pressure is felt, continuing until a decent flow results. I then repeat the rigmarole on my b/room basin taps. It can take a few minutes and several litres of water before the proper flow begins. Some suggest sucking on the tap but you won't want a mouthful of boiling water so turn the boiler heater off before trying to clear the air lock.

Before you turn the water heater on, make sure that water is flowing smoothly out of both hot and cold taps, with no spluttering. That means the boiler is completely filled with water.

There is a 'frost protection valve' that trips if the temperature gets down to about +4 degrees C, which is very likely at this time of year. If it has tripped, the water pours out onto the ground outside, from somewhere near the boiler.
