Hi. I'm new.
I've been watching/reading the forum for years.
Might be buying a Swift Edge 494. Opinions please. I think it's 2020 year 6000 miles and may be automatic, has awning and camera. Would it have the "good" gearbox. What does it weigh empty. Possible mpg.private sale/purchase. What's a hood price.
Thanks in advance.

:welcome4:
Maybe automatic, does the seller not know?
Any link to the motorhome?

It's my neighbour who might be selling, we haven't viewed yet. Is auto a more expensive option. It is on a Fiat chassis and he bought from new.

Yes. Nine on auto trader. I think they only cost 50k in 2020. But seem to be for sale for more now ??

No matter how new it is, or how friendly you are with the seller (your neighbour), get yourself a decent damp meter and go through it thoroughly. Swift's Kontiki model wasn't known as "leaky Kontiki" for nothing. ;)

Good luck,

Jock. :)

Regardless of it being your neighbour, is it right for you?

Have you had motorhomes before? Borrowed? Rented?

Unless it is an absolute bargain, I would be wary of buying just because it is convenient, unless you are sure it is the layout / size you want.

Well. It might be too big for the two of us. We've always had big caravans (just sold) in the past and motorhome forty years ago. Away in our self build camper at the moment. But at our age thinking of longer times away (Norway and Spain). If its a bargain but doesn't suit we can always sell.

The advice I was after was is this a good budget van???
I can add lithium/more solar and a diesel heater to better off grid.

I think one of the probs you need to consider with any van you want to go to Scandinavia in is the build of the vehicle and the likely temperature when you're there. I know our 2013 Reg Pilote was said to be able to withstand a Swedish winter but we've never actually tried it so hence don't know whether it might or not. The cold water tank is largely inside the body under seating - but the drainage and overflow pipe isn't and the waste tank ain't either.

When payloads are quoted, they don't allow for a driver heavier than 75 kg OR any passengers whatsoever and any extras added eg an awning or a bike rack won't have been counted. Oh - or a full tank of water, a full tank of fuel, any food or any clothes, cooking utensils etc.

So - why's Mr Next Door selling it then?

Well if they are 50k from a dealer, which will come with warranty, you will want to knock at least 10% off that for a private sale.
