Hi folks

Some interesting DC-DC news. I thought I’d drop this here for everyone's benefit as we’ve had discussions with numerous people through the months regarding the new up-and-coming Victron 50A DC-DC charger.

We’ve had confirmation from our Victron Account Manager that the new DC-DC charger can be pre-ordered and is scheduled to ship in around 3 weeks.

We’re pretty excited about this charger because so many people have alternators with extra capacity and LiFePO4 batteries that can accept a much higher charge. Up to now the only way to utilise this capacity has been to place two or more Victron DC-DC chargers in parallel or to buy another brand.

Looking forward to playing with it.

From the Victron article which is here:

Smart BuckBoost DC-DC 50A Charger Non-Isolated

Engineered from the ground up, the Smart BuckBoost redefines adaptive DC-DC charging. For use in dual battery systems charged with an (intelligent) alternator. This device not only ensures top-tier performance but also guarantees the safety of your system.

Stay in charge with configurable input and output currents, and rest assured that your Smart BuckBoost will run at full capacity up to 40°C. The innovative aluminium circuit board cooling technology delivers an astonishing 98% efficiency without the need for fans.

As an integral part of your Victron system, the Smart BuckBoost offers full (remote) monitoring and control capabilities, giving you complete command of your device and system.

  • Fully configurable
  • Engine shutdown detection
  • Intelligent charge algorithms
  • Efficient cooling
  • Works with VictronConnect
  • Remote monitoring optional

What’s it going to cost?

Looks very nice.

The 98% efficiency is the big change over the old Orions. They got pretty toasty because their efficiency wasn't great.

The other improvement is the data. Previously the only thing you could see over the app was that it was on.

Yeah, and it’s gonna be good to see that 98% efficiency enable the full 50A. In many cases the 30A operates at far less when it heats up (self regulates). Many people have used fans to cool it down to get the full output.

Hopefully it shows up nicely on GX and VRM.
